  • The famous Penny Catechism - Baptism of Water.

      Baptism
      256.What is Baptism?

Baptism is a Sacrament which cleanses us from original sin, makes us Christians, children of God, and members of the Church.

257.Does Baptism also forgive actual sins?

Baptism also forgives actual sins, with all punishment due to them, when it is received in proper disposition by those who have been guilty of actual sin.

258.Who is the ordinary minister of Baptism?

The ordinary minister of Baptism is a Bishop, a priest or a deacon; in case of necessity such as danger of death, any one may baptize.

      259.How is Baptism given?

Baptism is given by pouring water on the head of the child, saying at the same time these words:'I baptize you in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit'.

260.What do we promise in Baptism?

We promise in Baptism to renounce the devil and all his works and pomps.

      261.Is Baptism necessary for salvation?

Baptism is necessary for salvation, because Christ has said: 'Unless a man be born again of water and the Holy Spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God'. John 3:5

If any one saith that true and natural water is not of necessity for baptism, and on that account wrests to some sort of metaphor those words of Our Lord Jesus Christ, "Unless a man be born again of water and the Holy Ghost...,"  Let Him Be Anathama.  -COUNCIL OF TRENT Sess VII Canon II “On Baptism"

Thanks. Stand by for the, "BoD/B, while not sacraments, supply for the sacrament..." ... making them effectively, distinction w/o significant difference, sacraments jive.

    "Lord, have mercy".

The highest authority in the Church, in Heaven and upon the Earth.  You either believe the Gospel or you do not, and it really is just that simple.  Speculate all you want, but believe the Lord above all.

  • Here's a question. Is this Catechism heretical from BODers perspective? A Catechism, with all the proper approvals, which BODers imply is a Catholic's rule of faith, does not teach their belief on Salvation. If fact, as is, the language excludes all exceptions. It does not teach BOD. If one were to learn from this Catechism and be faced with a BODers teaching that there are alternatives or exceptions to the Sacrament and deny those exceptions would a BODer call that person a heretic?
You can't give what you don't have. Asking for coherence and consistency from the necessarily incoherent and inconsistent sounds like a loser to me.

When words like 'yes' or 'no' mean either "maybe" or their opposite, how is that not the "Icecapades" of uphill skating?

It's wheelspinning from the outset. You read those intros yet, at least the ones in le Poissy? Pope Pius IX nailed this whole deal in a short address.

That sort of thing makes a complete joke of the faith. Nothing says "Catholics have their heads up their colons" more effectively than this kind of Jєωthink. It's a "good" day when it's just our own bits in the mix.
    "Lord, have mercy".
