Rαdio Message of Pope Pius XII
TO THE FAITHFUL MEXICANS IN THE 50TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE CANONICAL CORONATION OF THE VIRGIN OF GUADALUPE*
Friday 12 October 1945
[V]enerable Brothers and beloved children who, gathered around the person of Our most worthy Cardinal Legate, commemorate the fifty years of the canonical coronation of the Virgin of Guadalupe.
It had been more than three centuries since the day when the sweet Mother of Tepeyac began to receive the homages of the Catholics of Mexico and all America, on the throne chosen by Herself; you had Her in the center of your hearts and that is why you had repeatedly proclaimed Her 'Lady and Patroness'; you had dedicated first a hermitage, then a chapel, then a temple and finally a magnificent Basilica; Mexican voices acclaimed Her continuously and the cry never stopped: Noble indita. Mother of God; Noble indita, our Mother. But your sympathies were not yet satisfied; you wanted to see Her with a band around the forehead, as it befits a sovereign. She was your Queen and the Queen had to be crowned!
And finally your desire was realized. Fifty years ago today,- the chronicles remind us - the newly restored Basilica, was an ember of gold; tens of thousands of pilgrims crowded the spacious naves and spilled around; almost forty mitres bowed reverently in the presbytery; the lives, hymns and prayers reached the sky. And when the golden crown shone on that angelic forehead, from all hearts and all mouths, exploded the cry, until then poorly contained: “Long live the Virgin of Guadalupe, Empress of America and Queen of Mexico!” The spectacle was so beautiful, it looked like a sweet dream. In reality it was no more than the triumph, conscious and serene, of your love and your faith.
Very just tribute. For who could ignore what that nation owed to that Lady? Who could not remember the most important part that She had had in her vocation to the true Church, in her preservation within the practice and purity of a faith, which had been like the crucible in which her young and powerful nationality had melted?
The Blessed Virgin was the providential instrument, chosen by the designs of the heavenly Father, to give and present Her precious Son to the world; to be Mother and Queen of the Apostles, who everywhere were to propagate their doctrine; to always combat heresies, and even to intervene prodigiously at all times, wherever it was necessary for the implantation, consolidation and defense of the holy Catholic faith. “By Her,” says a great devotee of Mary to this purpose, “the Holy Cross is celebrated and worshiped throughout the universe...; by It every creature, imprisoned in the errors of idolatry, is brought to the knowledge of the Truth; ... by It the Apostles preached salvation to the nations” [1].
And so it happened, when the hour of God sounded for the long regions of the Anáhuac. They had just opened up to the world, when the miracle flourished on the shores of Lake Texcoco. In the tilma of poor Juan Diego, as tradition refers, bushes that were not from here below left a very sweet painted image, which the corrosive work of the centuries would wonderfully respect. The kind little maiden asked for a seat “to show and give all Her love and compassion, help and defense...to all the inhabitants of that land and to the others who invoked Her and trusted Her.” From that historical moment the total evangelization was done. And, what is more, a flag was raised, a fortress raised, against which the wrath of all the storms would be broken; one of the fundamental pillars of faith in Mexico and throughout America was firmly established in Mexico and throughout America. As if the Cross, which, such a day as today, through the fitful waves, had brought to the new continent the fragile Hispanic caravels, had been entrusted to the weak hands of that young woman, so that She would triumphantly walk through all those lands, plant It everywhere and then retire in this rock castle, overlooking the old Tenochitlán, from there to reign throughout the New World and watch over your faith; "because, using the happy expressions of one of your fathers, She knows that such a daughter - as this Queen proclaims her - will faithfully preserve the deposit of faith, which saves the world.
Today, beloved American congressmen, Our thought, with a faster and more accurate flight than that of the waves that take you Our voice, puts Us in the midst of you; and once again Our spirit is comforted to admire your numbers without number, your enthusiasm without limits: seeing that in this moment more than fifty Archbishops and Bishops represent there, in your midst, the faith of all the peoples of America; upon receiving, in the person of Our Legate, the magnificent testimonies of your filial devotion which are already known to Us.
And seeing that the center of all those fervors is still your Excellent Patroness, to see, almost with Our own eyes, that you continue to acclaim the Virgin of Guadalupe as your Mother and your Queen, let us look up to heaven and give thanks to the Author of all good, because in this love and in this fidelity we want to see the guarantee of the preservation of your Faith.
For her, Mexican Catholics, your brothers and your parents were the victims of persecution, and to defend her they faced without hesitation, even with the same death, to the double cry of “Long live Christ the King!, Long live the Virgin of Guadalupe!” Today, the conditions of the Church and of Religion in your Homeland have improved markedly, demonstrating that this invocation and that firmness were not useless. But it is up to you and all American Catholics to stand firm in your post, aware of your rights, with your forehead always high before the enemies of today and always: those who do not love Mary because they do not want Jesus, those who would like to corner or ignore Jesus, thus snatching from Mary the most precious of Her titles. In the face of their rebellion, your faithfulness. May the brunette of the Tepeyac, may the Empress of America and Queen of Mexico not have to cry over defections. That, as She was yesterday, She can also be proud of Her children tomorrow.
Your Congress, collecting thousands of signatures, has acclaimed Her as “Sedes sapientiae”, the throne of wisdom. Do not forget it, Catholics of Mexico and all America: true Wisdom is what She gave us, the one that in the Name of Wisdom Incarnate She teaches us. “Save, abundant fountain from which the streams of divine wisdom flow, rejecting with the most pure and very cleansed waters of orthodoxy, the curly waves of error! [2]. Hail, O Virgin of Guadalupe! We, to whom the admirable disposition of Divine Providence entrusted, without taking into account Our unworthiness, the sacred treasure of divine Wisdom on earth, for the salvation of all souls, We
again place today upon Your temples the CROWN, which sets forever under your powerful patronage the purity and integrity of holy Faith in Mexico and throughout the American continent. Because we are certain that while You are recognized as Queen and as Mother, America and Mexico have been saved.
The Apostolic Blessing, which we wholeheartedly give you, be as a gift of these Our desires.
