  • The threads with PDFs of "complete chapters" of Fr. Wathen's works have been removed at the request of the James F. Wathen Traditional Catholic Foundation.

    Sorry for the inconvenience.

  • First question:  Is that a real foundation?  I've never heard of it.

Second question:  Do they sell these books?

Third question:  Can you provide the mailing address (not email, but a real postal mailing address) for this foundation?

It would not surprise me that one of Father Wathen's enemies sent you the request just to silence Father Wathen's works.  Also, I am wondering if this "foundation" actually owns the copyright of Father Wathen's works.

  • I believe that the book is scheduled for reprinting as it is out of print at present.

Go to FatherWathen.com for information, sermons, books, and writings of this most extraordinary and holy priest.

I think that his foundation is headed by his brother John Wathen, also a devout and gracious Catholic man.

  • I know John Wathen.  He is not heading up any foundation.

So, back to my questions.  Am I correct to presume the actual answers to my questions are negative?  I see nothing on FatherWathen.com about a "foundation".

  • It seems best to post the e-mail I received:

    Quote
    Greetings!

I am a representative of the James F. Wathen Traditional Catholic Foundation, which, as you can see from our website (http://fatherwathen.com) is currently involved with bringing Father's works back into print. We currently have The Great Sacrilege in print again, and are in the process of getting Who Shall Ascend to print very soon.

The reason I am writing this is that I noticed there is a user on your forum submitting scanned PDF's of Father's work. As we understand, the only exception to the copyright over the work which is currently held by the estate of Father Wathen via the Father Wathen Foundation was given by Father to the owners of http://dailycatholic.org for distribution on their website only. Though we make no attempt to squelch enthusiasm for Father and his writings, we ask that free distribution of his writings be kept to partial cited excerpts only, and not to complete chapters of his works.

This is for a couple reasons; on the one hand, is is a painstaking effort to re-produce such works as those which Father wrote. We have only ever striven to do so in a manner fitting to the spirit and original purpose in which they were written. I can guarantee that the finished product we produced reflects such. However, we cannot guarantee the integrity of spurious reproductions of Father's works, and it is entirely possible that any mistake, whether accidental or otherwise, in the reproduction, could injure the very intention of the author that person is trying to promote. Of course, it takes considerable investments of time and money to propel the Foundation through the challenges of our apostolate, all of which are covered by donations and sales of books and other media, all of which is available from our website.

At any rate, we are happy to see enthusiasm behind Father's writings. Please let me know if I can be of any further service.

    God bless and best regards,
    David Schroth, Jr.

  • In my opinion, he should be as gracious to Fr. Wathen's supporters as he was in his e-mail to me. In other words, he should sign up for CathInfo and explain everything, including answers to your questions, which I believe are quite legitimate.

This is the Traditional Catholic world, after all. We understand how the Church has enemies -- fierce ones. Supporters of Fr. Wathen understand this as well as any Traditional Catholic!

In the Traditional Catholic world, trust is in short supply, and actions speak louder than words.

If he does NOT go out of his way to foster good PR on the grassroots level, this Fr. Wathen Foundation will come across as another Disney, Viacom, or other big media label that threatens unemployed college students with legal action when they try to post 3 minute movie clips on Youtube. No one likes Goliath; everyone roots for David.

  • From my experience, the logic used by those making the decision to prohibit the book from being published online is flawed for two reason:

    1.  Internet scanned books are often "here today, gone tomorrow," and many crave to have a permanent copy of the book for reference for future reading or research.

    2.  The internet is never a substitute for a physical tangible book.  I for one, always prefer ownership of a physical book in addition to internet scans.  Many who read booms online would prefer both, to have a real book in addition to online access of a scan.

In my opinion, having an online scan would only increase sales of a physical book, as many desire permanence.

For this reason, I bought a used, but in good condition, book, The Great Sacrilege, by Fr. Wathen, off of Ebay around the time these PDFs and another thread apropos to the the book was posted here at CI. I would have bought it new if I did not find it used on Ebay.

  • Hello,

I checked with John, and he is in agreement with what I said above. I will prepare the PDF for you and give your site users a 10% discount via a coupon code that will work on our new site (which will be up probably by the first of the year.)

    God bless,
    David

Sorry it took longer than expected to get back to you. Have been pretty bogged down with Christmas preps, etc. . . As promised, here is a PDF of The Great Sacrilege, for the purpose of distribution on your website.

Also, I promised we would give a coupon code for your users. That will be CATHINFO when our new site is up and running (should be within a couple weeks). Thank you for your correspondence and let me know if there is anything further we at the Foundation can do for you!

    Best regards and God bless,
