The Catholic Universe, Volume 46, Number 44, 7 May 1920(By N. C. W. C. News Service)Teutopolis, III., May 3.—Women members of the Third Order of St. Francis, have inaugurated a vigorous campaign to
induce the Catholic women of America to comply with the Holy Father's request of a return to more modest fashions. The rule of the Third Order forbids wearing bizarre or immodest garments and it is chiefly by example that the campaign will be carried on. In order to make the work constructive and not critical, thousands of printed pledge cards, containing four rules to be observed by women who desire to take part in the new movement, are being sent to pastors throughout America.
The cards bear on one side an extract from the recent statement of the Holy Father to the Italian women on immodest dress, and on the other the following pledge:
"In response to the appeal made by the Holy Father to combat indecency in dress, I......... for the greater glory of God, in honor and under the protection of the Immaculate Queen and model of womenhood, in order to set an edifying example and to show unmistakably my own love of Christian modesty, do hereby promise henceforth to conform to the standard of dress comprising the following four points:"1. The strict exclusion of all so-called decollete gowns and likewise of all low-necked dresses, i.e.,
such as are cut lower than the little hollow of the throat."2. The elimination of short sleeves and of the short as well as the tight skirt.
"3. The non-use of transparent hose and of all transparent or diaphanous outer garments, unless the transparency is nullified by an undergarment."4. The wearing of sufficient clothes to prevent needless revealing of the form."
