             Today all good Catholics are preparing to keep the month of May in honour of our Blessed Lady. This is a devotion in which every little child should try to join; for every child knows he should honour and love his parents, and above all his mother. Well, Mary is our Mother in heaven, and loves us far more even than the best and kindest mother on earth. Our Blessed Mother Mary loves little children very dearly. If they are good children, they remind her of the Holy Child Jesus, and she loves them because they are trying to be like Him. If they are naughty, she loves them also, because a mother loves even her naughty child, and hopes one day that it will be good. So Mary loves you, my dear child, whoever you may be. It does not matter to her whether you are rich or poor, or whether you are clever or dull. It is your soul Mary loves, and all little children have souls--souls that will certainly be either for ever with God and the bright angels, or with the devil and the wicked angels. Now, try to think what you ought to ask our Blessed Mother Mary to do for you during this month of May, and say the following prayer:

    Prayer

    Mother of Jesus, and my Mother, look with pity and love upon a child who wishes to honour you during the coming month. Oh, help me to spend it in the way that will be most pleasing to you, and then I may be sure I shall be pleasing your divine Son. I humbly ask you, O Blessed Lady, to be my Mother, and to take me for your own child. I desire to consecrate myself entirely to you, I put my whole life under your special protection; watch over me, guard me, pray for me, love me, O dear, Mother Mary, from this moment until my dying hour, and then present me safely to Jesus. I offer you all the good and holy words and works that will be done in your honour during this month of May; and I offer you the prayers which I hope to say every day that I may obtain [here name your intention], and also in thanksgiving for [here mention what you wish to thank God for]; I also offer all the indulgences that I may gain by these prayers for the souls in purgatory for whom you wish me to pray. O Mother of Jesus, bless and help your poor child now and for ever. Amen.
    Then say three times, Sweet Heart of Mary, be my salvation,--
    as there are three hundred days indulgence for each time you say it.
     If you have time, you might also say a part of the Rosary,
     or at least one Our Father and ten Hail Marys.

  • The Gifts we are to Beg of Our Lady During the Month of May
    "To thee, O Mary, have been confided all the treasures of grace."

    Joy of my heart! oh let me pay
     To thee thine own sweet month of May.
     Mary! one gift I beg of thee,--
     My soul from sin and sorrow free.
    We love thee, light of sinners' eyes!
     Oh let thy prayer for sinners rise.
     Look at us, Mother Mary! see
     How piteously we look to thee.
    Direct my wandering feet aright,
     And be thyself mine own true light.
     Be love of thee the purging fire,
     To cleanse for God my heart's desire.
    I am thy slave, nor would I be
     For worlds from this sweet bondage free.
     O Jesus, Joseph, Mary, deign
     My soul in heavenly ways to train.
    Mother! be love of thee a ray
     From heaven, to show the heavenward way.
     Mary! make haste thy child to win
     From sin, and from the love of sin.
    Sweet Stewardess of God, thy prayers
     We beg, who are God's ransomed heirs.
     O Virgin-born! O Flesh Divine!
     Cleanse us, and make us wholly thine.
    Mother of God! let my poor love
     A mother's prayers and pity move.
     O Mary! when I come to die,
     Be thou, thy spouse, and Jesus nigh.
    Mary, dear Mistress of my heart,
     What thou wouldst have me do, impart.
     Thou, who wert pure as driven snow,
     Make me as thou wert here below.
    When mute before the Judge I stand,
     My holy shield be Mary's hand.
     O Mary ! let no child of thine
     In hell's eternal exile pine.
    O Queen of Heaven! obtain for me
     Thy glory there one day to see.
     Oh then and there, on that bright day,
     To me thy womb's chaste Fruit display.
    If time for penance still be mine.
     Mother, the precious gift is thine.
     Thou, Mary, art my hope and life,
     The starlight of this earthly strife.
    Mother of God! to me no less,
     Vouchsafe a mother's sweet caress.
     Be love of thee, my whole life long,
     A seal upon my wayward tongue.
    Oh, for my own and others' sin,
     Do thou, who canst, free pardon win.
     To sinners all, to me the chief,
     Send, Mother, send thy kind relief.
    Write on my heart's most secret core,
     The five dear Wounds that Jesus bore.
     Oh give me tears to shed with thee
     Beneath the Cross of Calvary.
    To thee our love and troth are given.
     Pray for us, pray, bright Gate of Heaven.
     Sweet Day-Star! let thy beauty be
     A light to draw my soul to thee.
    One more request and I have done
     With love of thee and thy dear Son;
     More let me burn, and more each day,
     Till love of self is burned away.

    Hymn of Welcome to the Month of May
    "Devotion to Mary is a characteristic of salvation."--St. John Damascenes

    Welcome to this world of woe,
     To each plilgrim here below,
     Nature's voice o'er hill and dale,
     Bids you, Month of Mary, hail;
     Come, ye children of the spring,
     Fair and fragrant flow'rets bring;
     Welcome, Month of Mary!
    Mystic Rose! that precious name
     Mary from the Church doth claim;
     In the lily's silver bells
     The purity of Mary dwells.
     In the myrtle's fadeless green
     Mary's constancy is seen.
     Welcome, Month of Mary!
    Come, that from your treasures sweet
     We may twine a chaplet meet
     To be offered at the shrine
     Of the Mother-Maid Divine;
     Bring the rose, for in its hue
     Mary's ardent love we view.
     Welcome, Month of Mary!
    Month of bright and radiant skies!
     Tribute flowers to greet you rise.
     Come, for we are weary here,
     Till your music greets the ear;
     Till your rosy fingers fair
     Scatter perfumes on the air.
     Welcome, Month of Mary!

    We do love you, Month, most fair,
     For the precious name you bear;
     And we hail you with delight;
     Mary's name sheds lustre bright;
     Every flow'ret seems to say,
     Mary's is the month of May.
     Welcome, Month of Mary!

  • http://catholicharboroffaithandmorals.com/Little%20Office%20Ordinary%20Main.html

    The Little Office of the Blessed Virgin is here provided in the ordinary form which begins with Matins the day after the Purification until Advent and conforms with the revisions of Pope St. Pius X in 1910. For anyone not familiar with this devotion, following a printed copy of this work can prove a daunting task, especially when trying to discern between seasonal texts. In order to eliminate any confusion, we have only included the specific Antiphons, Little Chapters, Anthems etc. for Ordinary cycle, presenting them in an easy to follow format intended primarily for private devotion. Additional clarification is also provided throughout the hours with special notes "Following the Rubrics."
    The faithful who find it difficult to pray at the appointed canonical hours should not be discouraged from practicing this devotion to Our Lady. While it is true that the Church designates specific times of day for the public recitation of each of the Hours of the Little Office, the faithful who participate privately will still derive great spiritual benefits (see the Sabbatine Privilege) . One should, however make every effort to say at least the morning hours in the morning and the evening hours at night.

    Prayer Before the Office

    O Lord, open Thou my mouth, that it may bless Thy holy name; cleanse my heart, too, from all vain, evil, or wandering thoughts. Enlighten mine understanding, kindle mine affections, that I may be able to say this Office meetly with attention and devotion and may deserve to be heard before the presence of Thy divine Majesty. Through Christ our Lord.

    R. Amen.

    O Lord, in union with that divine intention wherewith Thou Thyself, while on earth, didst offer praises unto God, I offer these Hours unto Thee.

    Following the Rubrics:

    As a rule, in the recitation of the Little Office of the Blessed Virgin Mary the Antiphons of the Psalms are announced in the manner that is proper to an Office of simple rite, i.e. only the first words (preceding the asterisk *) of the Antiphons are said before the Psalms, but the entire Antiphon is recited after the Psalms. When exceptions are made and Antiphons are recited as of double rite, all the Antiphons to the Psalms and Canticles have to be said in full before and after.

    To Begin the Little Office, select from among the 7 Canonical Hours by clicking on one of the links below:
    (Matins with Lauds is only one Canonical Hour)

    Vespers               Evening Prayer (generally at 6 p.m.)
    The Flight into Egypt

    Compline               Night Prayer
    (before retiring, generally at 9 p.m.)
    The Coronation of the Virgin

    Matins                During the night
    (at midnight with some)
    The Annunciation
    With Lauds               Dawn Prayer (at Dawn, or 3 a.m.)
    The Visitation

    Prime               Early Morning Prayer
    (First Hour: approximately 6 a.m.)
    The Nativity

    Tierce               Mid-Morning Prayer
    (Third Hour: approximately 9 a.m.)
    The Annunciation of the Shepherds

    Sext               Midday Prayer
    (Sixth Hour: approximately 12 noon)
    The Adoration of the Magi

    None               Mid-Afternoon Prayer
    (Ninth Hour: approximately 3 p.m.)
    The Presentation in the Temple

    Gregorian Chant provides the background for the Little Office of the Blessed Virgin Mary. The Anthem Alma Redemptoris Mater, Magnificat Canticle, Hymn Ave Maris Stella and Ave Maria are all found in the Little Office during the Season of Advent.

    Prayer After the Office

    To the most holy and undivided Trinity, to the manhood of our crucified Lord Jesus Christ, to the fruitful virginity of the most blessed and glorious Mary, ever a virgin, to the entire assembly of the saints, be ascribed everlasting praise, honor, power, and glory, by every creature; and to us be granted the remission of all our sins, world without end. Amen.

    V. Blessed is the Virgin Mary's womb,
    which bore the Son of the everlasting Father.

     R. And blessed are the breasts
    which nourished Christ our Lord.

    Our Father, Who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done on earth, as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. Amen.

    Hail, Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with thee: blessed art thou amongst women, and blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus. Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners now and at the hour of our death. Amen.

    On the Love of Mary for Her Children

             Mary loves us because we are her children. A loving and tender Mother is never wearied by the importunities of her little ones; and Mary, who is the most loving and tender of all mothers, will never weary of hearing and answering our petitions. The one great thing that she desires for all her children is, that they should become like her Son Jesus. He is the only Child who never disobeyed her or grieved her. It is for His love that she loves us. How great must be His love for us, when He inspires Mary with such a love! The best return we can make Him is to have a perfect trust and confidence in His Blessed Mother. Those who are not devout to Mary cannot really understand the great mystery of the Incarnation, and do not love Jesus as they should--for if they loved Him, they would love His Mother also.

    Let us try, then, during this month of May, to become more like Jesus. Let us consider what spiritual grace we need most in order to attain this great end, and let us ask it with confidence every day. Let us also try to induce others to honour Mary by special devotion to her during this month.
    Prayer

    Mother of Jesus, we have assembled now around your altar to offer you the devotions of the coming month. Obtain for each of us the special grace we need to become more like Jesus [here name the special grace and the other intentions which you wish to obtain during this month]. And if in our ignorance we have not asked what is really most necessary for us, "show thyself a Mother," and obtain it for us from the Heart of your divine Son. We beseech you also, O Lady, to implore the tenderest benediction of that Heart for this [ family, convent, or congregation]. He alone knows the special need and desire of each, and He can refuse you nothing. We offer you all the prayers, processions, devotions, Masses, Benedictions, penances, and fasts that may be performed in your honour during the coming month--obtain abundant graces for the whole Church, and an increase of devotion to your immaculate Heart. Amen.

    An indulgenced prayer from the Raccolta (authorised translation) has been added for each day. There is also an indulgence of 100 days for each day, granted "to all the faithful of the Catholic world who either in public or in private shall honour the Blessed Virgin with some special homage, or devout prayers, or other virtuous practices" (Raccolta, p. 193).
