The Principles of Dom de Monléon O.S.B.

Dom Jean de Monléon (1890?1981), a Benedictine monk of the Abbey of Sainte-Marie in Paris, is a unique figure in biblical scholarship in the 20th century. In a world riddled with rationalism, scientism, and skepticism, he produced a luminous, delightful, and profitable science of Holy Scripture.

This Holy Scripture is the word of God; it is the Revelation of the highest mysteries, such as God's intimacy in His Holy Trinity, the supernatural destiny of humans, and the Redemption accomplished by Jesus Christ. God revealed this to us in His eternal Word, and He communicates it to us through human words that are both accessible and transfigured.

Dom de Monléon highlights and admirably describes this transfiguration by drawing on the Church Fathers. They are the echoes of the apostolic Tradition that Jesus Christ entrusted to the Catholic Church: outside of it, the Holy Bible remains a sealed book that radiates a light yet effective enough to be recognized, but insufficient to lead to eternal salvation.

Studying under Dom de Monléon's school, therefore, is to see the word of truth shine, so clear to upright minds and so gentle to willing hearts.

His extensive ecclesiastical knowledge allowed him to see the weaknesses in many modern school commentators—weaknesses only masked by an impressive scientific apparatus from afar.

...In this work, we wish to respond to the call of the eminent writer who, through the assiduous reading of the Fathers of the Church, has managed to uncover the hidden sap beneath the letter of the Holy Books and who, putting an unparalleled literary genius at the service of an unwavering faith, has given the Bible a place it has never before held in French literature. The preface we have just read expresses with a force and conviction that it is impossible not to be moved by it, the wish of all those – and they are legion – who aspire to see the traditional interpretation of Scripture restored to honor, not, of course, to the exclusion of, but alongside the literary and scientific exegesis that today claims to reign alone.

We have endeavored to recover in their exact attitudes, in their harmonious proportions, in their original beauty these patriarchal figures, these marvelous statues that the Holy Spirit Himself has sculpted with love in the early days of the world, both to adorn the eternal temple of God, where worship is offered in spirit and truth, and to serve as models, indefinitely, through the centuries, to men who would want to live as men.

Such was the feeling of the Fathers of the Church towards them.

To a young man who asked him for advice on striving for perfection, Saint Gregory of Nyssa first quoted this text from Isaiah: " Look to Abraham and Sarah, who bore you." Then he added:

"This is addressed to wandering souls. Just as, for sailors carried far from the direction of the port, the sight of a fire rising from a height, or the peak of a mountain seen from afar, serves as a landmark to find the right course; in the same way, wandering souls, the spirit without a pilot in the ocean of life, are brought back to the port of divine will by the example of Abraham and Sarah. And since humanity is divided into two sexes, and that both are given the free choice between vice and virtue; the divine Word has placed before each a model to imitate, so that, as men look to Abraham and women to Sarah, both sexes can guide their lives according to virtue through appropriate examples.

Therefore, it will suffice for us to recall the life of one of these figures to serve as a beacon, thus showing how it is possible to bring the soul to the peaceful harbor of virtue, where it will no longer be exposed to the storms of life and will no longer risk shipwreck in the depths of sin under the onslaught of the successive waves of passions. The reason why the lives of these holy souls have been written in detail is surely to guide the lives of their successors along the path of good by the example of the righteous from ancient times. But one might say, if I am neither Chaldean as it is written of Abraham nor the adopted son of the princess of Egypt, as the Scripture teaches of Moses; if I share nothing in my way of living with any of these men of old, how can I conform my life to that of one of them? I do not see how to imitate someone who differs completely from me in his habits. We will respond to this by saying that it matters little, for vice or virtue, whether one is Chaldean; that neither living in Egypt nor dwelling in Babylon excludes anyone from the path to perfection. God is not known only in Judea; it is not only in Zion, although the Scripture seems to say so, that the house of God is found. But we will need careful meditation and sharper insight to discern, beyond the letter of the Scripture, which Chaldeans and which Egyptians we must avoid and what is the captivity of Babylon from which we must escape to attain the blessed life. "1

Similarly, Saint Ambrose begins the two books he wrote on Abraham with the following reflections:

"Plato, the prince of philosophers, deemed it useful to construct an ideal republic in his works, so that his fellow citizens had a model to imitate within it. And Xenophon, in his Cyropaedia, drew the type of the just and wise king to serve as a lesson to princes. Thus, Moses, in writing the life of Abraham, has shown us the model of the man of God, with this advantage over previous authors, that instead of forging an entirely fictitious being, he presents to our eyes a real character endowed with the most authentic virtues."

It is clear from these testimonies, and from many others, that for the Fathers of the Church, Abraham is not a primitive being barely emerging from a wild state or animality,...

The excavations in Ur have uncovered a large number of valuable objects, crafted with consummate art. The headdress, for example, and the harp of Queen Shub-Ad, displayed in the British Museum, or the gold helmet of Mes-Kaham-Dug, which can be seen in the Museum of Baghdad, testify to such finesse in taste, to such mastery in execution, that one is astonished to learn they predate Abraham by several centuries. ..
