Title: Fatima & Quod Provinciale On Christians Using Mohammedan Names Pope Benedict XIV
Post by: biblioc on November 28, 2019, 02:11:07 PM
Gee, funny, Fatima was Mohammad's Daughter's name? https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fatimah (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fatimah)

Did Pope Benedict XIV condemn the taking of Mohammedan names? https://www.papalencyclicals.net/ben14/b14quod.htm (https://www.papalencyclicals.net/ben14/b14quod.htm)

Learn something new every day.  I did not know this had ever been an issue, nor that the Church had spoken against it.

What about "Mohammedan" names that predate Islam?   I have to think that there was a culture in place, with both pagans and Christians, and that there were indigenous names.  Possibly Mohammed was among these names --- I wouldn't have any idea.  Ditto for Fatima.

I have to think that, in any case, the name "Fatima" now belongs to us, and could be used freely by Catholic women --- it's a very nice name.  This encyclical predated Our Lady of Fatima by ca. 150 years

The encyclical is addressed To Our Venerable Brothers the Archbishops and Bishops as well as Our Beloved Sons, the Parish Priests and Missionaries of the Province of Albania in the year 1754.

It is a very interesting docuмent, but limited to a national grouping, albeit containing excellent directions.

In my family, the choice of names was never anything other that boldly Catholic. Names like Bede, Clement, Thomas, Bernadatte, Clare, Rita. Always a saint's name. The same went for my parents' generation, and I'd assume the preceding one.

In following generations came the "Jєωιѕн" names, Jacob, Abraham, Jonathan, Esther, Judith, Naomi.

Then came the surnames, often originating in movie stars, Clint, Scott, Taylor,Wade etc.
