  • Due to the increasingly transient nature of my lifestyle, over the past year I have scanned the good part of my library. I realised in doing so I would be able to share my labours for the cause.

I was in urgent need of downsizing... the library si now electronic and the papers in the bin; except for the Breviary.

  • Thanks for sharing these. I downloaded the epub versions.

Why are the pdfs so large? Is it due to being scanned at a high dpi? I often come across pdfs that are only 2-3 mb in size, and yet have the same number of pages as much larger pdfs and are equal or superior in quality.

I suppose like most of us we learn tech stuff on a need to know basis. Obviously having scanned so many books, the latter product is far superior to the first.

The first thing I will say is that I set out to do the best job possible, using a flat bed scanner and page by page. One can spiritualise the work by reminding oneself that each page is a soul. I assure you there is a lot of blood sweat and tears involved.

I scan at 600 ppi [pixels per square inch]. A tad slower but a better job. An 8 year old Canoscan which will soon be replaced and Adobe Professional software.

I know there are other programs around on the cheap.

The end product is good and take for example the Breviaries [1942]; the quality of the scan is sufficient to do a reprint.

My Liturgical books are in storage at the moment but eventually I want to see what I can scan.

    I appreciate your work.

The reason I'm curious is that I've been thinking about scanning some of my books, but I'd like to scan them so that they are no more than 5mb each. PDFs above 20 mb are often sluggish to work with. I think if I were going to create a big scan I would use the DJVU format.

  • Frluc, thank you for all your work scanning those books.  May God reward you for your efforts!

Have you considered notifying any of the traditional book publishing companies that you have scanned the 1942 Breviary?  Since you have done one of the time consuming steps of the process, and also that you scanned it at such a high resolution, one of them may be prompted to republish the four volumes.

As you know, it is very difficult to find a complete set in good shape  from that period.  So many Catholics would be able to hold it in their hands again and say the praises due to God  if the 1942 Breviary were to be republished.

Missale Romanum and Breviarium Romanum are texts that need the occasional update such as for the Assumption of Our Lady; plus Religious Orders and National Regions have their own Proper.
E.g. I have a Carmelite Missale Romanum... there are Prefaces for St Teresa, St. John of The Cross and also for St. Elias...

Plus the question of Liturgy. Some follow that of Pope St. Pius X, some that of Pius XII and others that of 1962. These can be big and divisive questions.
