I used to show the "Conspiracy of Silence" video in my college courses. The students often commented on the irony that the teens who recanted (lied) were freed, and those who continued to tell the truth were horrendously punished. If I remember correctly Alicia Owen was never actually sentenced; the judge put her in prison for "contempt of court." Correct me if I'm wrong on that.

What was the general reaction from your students? (BTW I am impressed that you used this material as a teaching tool!!!)

I couldn't finish watching CofS because of being too acutely horrified by the visible damage of the young man telling his story. I was getting panic attacks. The Church is supposed to take care of this, right? Like those good brothers in Missouri (or someplace with an M) who ended up caring for the boy who'd been the inspiration for Peter Blatty's The Exorcist.

Now that my guilt for not offering a Holy Hour for these souls is somewhat lessened maybe I'll give it another go.

I used Conspiracy of Silence, along with numerous other films/videos which have become "unavailable" in teaching Sociology of Family Violence, and Sociology of Child sɛҳuąƖ Abuse classes. Prior to viewing it, they had done quite a bit of reading to give them a context with which to understand ritual trauma. They were also familiar with the human tendency to go into denial (cognitive dissonance.) Many of them told me that they found the information helpful. (Social workers, police and teachers were in my night classes.)

There's far too much "nαzι" nonsense in O'Brien's presentation. Some nonsense about The Inquisition, too. I don't think she's worked her way through all of the programming.
