Dear sons and beloved cooperators, it is very important for the priest to educate. But what is education worth if it is not accompanied by love?

Woe to science – exclaimed Bossuet – which does not transform into love and in action!

Knowing God and his holy Church is a normal condition of salvation. But it is not enough to know God, we must adore him; It is not enough to know the doctrine of Holy Church, we must love it with an enthusiastic and extreme love, a clear and ardent reflection of the love that we owe to God.

By exposing to your parishioners the errors that we have pointed out, above all expose to them the truths which oppose these errors. Train them in such a way that they do not stop at knowledge, but also attain love. In other words, infuse into their souls this ardent love of Orthodoxy, this attachment to the Catholic cause, of which you are naturally, as priests, the living and edifying examples.

This virtue of the Catholic sense, you must ask for your parishioners, as We ourselves ask it for Us and for all our diocesans, in an unworthy but incessant prayer. Also teach them to ask for it for themselves. And so that our prayers, yours, beloved sons and dear cooperators, and those of all our dear diocesans may be accepted by God.

In concluding this letter, let us turn our eyes, humbly, towards the Sacred Heart of Jesus, abyss of all virtues, furnace of charity, center and model with all hearts. May the warmth of our souls be transformed into ardent zeal in contact with the flames that spring from the divine Heart. May our faults, our miseries, our indignities, attract upon us the mercy of this divine Heart, which is an abyss of charity. May the graces of which this divine Heart is the source, flow in all their fullness upon us, to illuminate our minds, strengthen our wills, so that we achieve, in all the measure which has been intended for us, this holiness which is the supreme desire of our souls.

For this to come true and for us to receive the full outpouring of the graces of the Heart of Jesus, let us approach the Immaculate Heart of Mary, the necessary channel through which our prayers go to the Heart of Jesus and through which the graces descend from the divine Heart to ours. The Immaculate Heart of Mary has recently manifested itself  to the shepherds of Fatima to ask us to do penance and promised us the most chosen graces. Let us listen to the call of this maternal Heart and, trusting in its intercession, let us work, dear sons and beloved cooperators, so that the reign of the Sacred Heart be established as soon as possible in our diocese.

With our eyes fixed on this ideal, We give to all of you and to our beloved sons, our parishioners, with paternal affection, our pastoral blessing.

In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.

Given and transmitted in our episcopal city of Campos, under the seal and sign of our arms, on January 6, 1953, on the feast of the Epiphany of Our Lord Jesus Christ.

† Antoine, bishop of Campos.
La mesure de l'amour, c'est d'aimer sans mesure.
The measure of love is to love without measure.
