  • Schuckardt didn't even seek out consecration. He was offered it.

    Church law (based on numerous papal decrees) says that you're SUSPENDED if you receive Holy Orders from a schismatic, not that you become a schismatic yourself ipso facto.  Given the state of emergency, I could see where such suspension would be lifted ... except that Daniel Brown abjured before performing the consecration, so even that may not apply.  Biggest problem was that the validity of Brown's orders was suspect.

  • Yes, the book is called "The Sacred and the Profane".  The first part is about Archbishop Thuc.  The second part is about Bishop Mendez and Bishop Kelly.  Using their own sequence, it would lead one to think that the first part (Archbishop Thuc) is actually "the sacred".  And the second part, therefore ...
