Rev. Fr. Reginald Garrigou-Lagrange in Chapter XXXI of his celebrated work
The Three Ages of the Interior Life: Prelude of Eternal Life, (St. Louis, MO: B. Herder Book Co., 1946), teaches how assisting at the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass can lead us to sanctify our souls and enable us to make progress in the interior life.
We have God Himself, the Incarnate Word, being sacrificed upon the sacred Altar before which we kneel and bow our heads in pious dread and holy meditation: why don't we make use of this supreme Sacrifice so that we may become all the more worthy of the graces Our Lord won for us in His sacred Passion, and of the Beatific Vision and everlasting possession of the selfsame Deity in Heaven, which is presaged by sanctifying grace?
