  • Yes, it seems that most Catholics do well to have a month's expenses socked away in a savings account. So all the items related to investments, etc. don't apply to many of us.

    However, the average Catholic very well MIGHT have a 401K -- which is the stock market. When that tanks, everyone will lose their retirement. People need to get used to the new reality -- if you really want to save up for 10, 20, or 40 years from now, then buy gold for crying out loud. Otherwise you might as well be throwing your money away. This isn't the 50's, or the 60's, or even the 80's. People USED to be able to sock away money in the bank/stock market and retire when they hit 65. Not anymore. That might have worked for your dad, but it won't work for you. Sorry to break the bad news.

    Social Security won't be there for people who are currently under 40. Nevermind the stock market...

    Anyhow, it would seem that directing ones life to what's important does NOT necessarily bring great material wealth.
