The House of Representatives on Thursday voted down a measure that would have reauthorized extended unemployment insurance for another three months, leaving no clear path forward to prevent the benefits from lapsing as scheduled on Nov. 30.

Without a reauthorization, the Labor Department estimates that two million long-term unemployed will prematurely stop receiving benefits before the end of the year.

“I think it’s a sad moment,” said Rep. Alan Grayson (D-Fla.) after the vote. “It appalls me that the Republicans keep pitching and pitching and pitching the tax cuts for the rich and won’t join in a bill to help people keep their homes and not have to live in their cars.”

The bill was brought to the floor under a “suspension of the rules,” meaning it required approval from two-thirds of the House. It failed 258 to 154, with mostly Democratic support. Twenty-one Republicans voted in favor and 11 Democrats voted nay.

  • Yeah...

Their policies sent jobs out of this country, and now, people can't find work. We get to pay for their cushy health insurance and their gold retirement plan, but they don't care about people not being able to work, many of them paying into the unemployment system every paycheck for years, and now not even being able to support themselves. Hillary Clinton, meanwhile, is bribing Israel with $3Billion worth of jets to "hold off" building in the West Bank for "three months" with a promise that she won't stop them again after that. That $3 Billion could have been better used to help people in need here, but she'd rather bribe the murderers over there with our money.

    Real nice. Merry Christmas, CONgress!
    Matthew 5:37

But let your speech be yea, yea: no, no: and that which is over and above these, is of evil.

  • I  know people that been out of work for about two
years that have, and about to run out of employment
    insurance.
Our government and the news media are dishonest in
reporting the true unemployment figures. Trusted
Economists such as John Williams of Shadowstats.com
is between 17% and as high as 22%. This is Great
    Depression levels of the 1930's.
In the future, the only jobs gains will be starting
your own business, take a government job, or
    joining the military.
The government is bringing in over 100,000 legal
immigrants, plus the H1B's every year to compete
for scarce service jobs. This is on top of all the
    illegal immigration.
I am afraid for now, and the near future, the
jobless will continue to climb. But, you will hear of
a very little of it on the mass media, because the
government will not report the correct figures,
and the seriousness of the situation.

  • Do any of the figures include those who ran out of employment a long, long time ago, cannot find another job, and are scrounging to eke out an existence?

  • A NewsChannel 5 investigation found companies across the state are importing foreign workers at a time when the unemployment rate is near 10 percent.

We spent months reviewing applications Tennessee businesses sent to the federal government as part of a federal visa program called H-2B.

The use of H-2B guest workers has soared nationally, from around 15,000 visas issued in 1997, to an all time high of more than 129,000 issued in 2007. The program was designed to provide temporary workers for small businesses with jobs Americans do not want.

When businesses apply for the right to bring foreign workers into the country, they must prove that no Americans are qualified or interested in the jobs.

Our investigation revealed companies are bending the rules and even lying on federal applications.

Here in Tennessee, business owners told the federal government they could not find people willing to do horse grooming jobs that paid $15.00 an hour, golf course landscaping that paid more than $10.00 an hour and operating carnival rides at more than $7.00 an hour.

The way it was before the Clinton years, The Department
of Labor would make monthly random nationwide telephone
calls, and you were considered to be unemployed if you
    applied for unemployment, collecting unemployment,
working part time while looking for a full time employment.
Exhausted unemployment insurance, and looking for work,   and if you stopped looking for work because of no jobs available, and discouraged for lack of finding a job.
If this model was still in use, the correct unemployment
figure would be between 17% to 22%.
Recently, a private polling company telephoned random,
and reported at lease 25% of the households reported
at lease one member of their family is out of work.
