  • "The Dow Jones Industrial Average DJIA, -0.07%  which suffered a 1,000 point loss in a matter of minutes on Monday, traded in a 120-point range on Friday, and closed down 11.76 points, or less than 0.1% at 16,643.01. The blue-chip index gained 1.1% over the week."

Based on the quote above does this mean that the market was down 11.76 points from where it opened on Monday morning or Friday morning?

Another post said it was predicted to go down 1k points this week.  I'm just trying to understand this mess

  • On Friday, it closed down 11.76 points for the day, that is from Friday's open to Friday's close.

Monday, it opened at 16450 and closed on Friday at 16643, so for the week, that is, from Monday's open to Friday's close, it closed up 193 points.

The DOW index starts M-F @ 9:30am and ends at 4:00pm eastern time.

The week prior to last, the DOW lost about 1000 points.

  • Ok, thanks for the explanation.  I find the market very confusing.
