Shortages?

  • Hey all,

I don't want to sound alarmist, but I wanted to mention something rather curious.  At the local supermarket where I work, we've been "running low" on frozen vegetables (generic brand from my company) for 3-4 weeks now.  To be more realistic, the shelves in that area are about 50-75% bare.  We get an occasional box or two, but nothing close to the full loads that we're accustomed to.  Finally, one of the managers wrote up a short note and taped it to the freezer doors where the vegetables are, explaining the situation.  Supposedly, it is the fault of distrubition plant.  They're just not sending any.  Curious...

Anybody else having similar situations near them?  I haven't been able to drive around to check out the other local markets yet, but I'll let you know if I get a chance.  Oh, by the way, we're owned by Albertsons.

    Thanks everyone,

    Pinoy Monk

  • I've seen a bit of that, but each individual case can be written off as "Oh, they just happened to run out."

But when they have bad weather, hard frosts, droughts, etc. don't you suppose a lot of food is destroyed? And when 25% of a crop is destroyed, doesn't that mean that there is 25% less to distribute?

At any rate, I would try to have more than a week's food in your house, if at all possible. You never want food to spoil or be wasted, but canned goods and cereal (dry goods) last a long time -- certainly much longer than a week or two. So you can easily work your way up to having several weeks' worth of food -- to be slightly prepared for the unknown.

You can eat the food anyhow -- it's not like it's going to go to waste. You might want to get out a Sharpie permanent marker to label the cans (when you bought them) so you can rotate stock.

  • Of course, I recognise that various disasters can disrupt the supply line, but I guess I found it rather curious that frozen vegetables (of all things) are the things to be showing up short.  I haven't worked outside of the frozen department for a while, so I haven't seen any patterns in other departments.  *Shrug.*

To add to the fun, it is only the generic brand that is short.  All of the mainstream varieties seem to be doing halfway decently.  Some icecreams (Breyers) are on the lighter side, but that happens from time to time...

Just figured I'd toss the idea out.

As to having plenty of food, I can't say that I'm hoarding anything.  There is always plenty of rice here though!   :sign-party-time:

  • If there really where shortages the price would have went up, are they more expensive to buy?
