  • Is there an address or real estate listing or contact info?  How do you know the price?

  • $170,000 ($131,000 USD) for 80 acres and a newer house with solar panels! Wow!

Our house in Texas was $190,000 and that's for a 8 year old 2,000 Sf house with NO solar panels and only 5 acres. And Texas is relatively cheap compared to most places in the US.

That's a nice property there. Of course, I note they took pictures in the summer :)
Where in Canada is this located? How far north? How long is the growing season?

It would be easier to preserve food there (just dig a hole for a quick refrigerator!) and water might be easier to come by, but you'd better be good at chopping wood to survive during the long cold winter.

Here in Texas our survival challenges are quite different. Keeping water during the dry season (both for humans as well as animals/plants/trees) would be a huge challenge. And instead of avoiding freezing to death, we'd have to avoid heat stroke during the long, hot (almost 6 month long) summer when the temperature scarcely falls below 80 degrees (Fahrenheit) even at night, and the humidity never abates.

On the other hand, we could grow food pretty much year round, even during the winter with a basic greenhouse. We actually count how many nights go below freezing here :) And it always makes it up to the 40's during the day, even in January.

So it's completely a game of "pick your poison" and "choose your challenges". There's no one place that's simply The Place To Be. Even California with its perfect weather has a high cost of living, tons of liberals and earthquakes, and might end up in the ocean.

I'm sure you could get a pretty huge piece of property in Alaska for this price, but you'd have to survive by trapping animals and so forth.

  • What are freedoms like in that part of Canada compared to some place like Idaho or Texas?  Gun rights, home schooling, vaccinations, govt generally leaving folks alone?

  • Yikes! A Buddha head in the living room. The Taliban missed busting that thing into shards. :-)

I thought this property was rather well done, but it is a non-starter for three reasons:
    (1) Not enough room for the children,
    (2) Colorado's really stupid gun laws, and
    (3) Colorado is the epicenter of "continuity of government" preparations.

  • Wow is the weather ever different there!

    https://www.wunderground.com/cgi-bin/findweather/getForecast?query=Burns+Lake%2C+British++Columbia

The farther north you go, the more wildly the day/night cycle swings. (If you go all the way above the Arctic Circle, you have periods of complete darkness and complete light).

This place isn't so far north, but look at this!

Length of Visible Light    16h 17m
    Length of Day   14h 55m
    Tomorrow will be 4m2s shorter.

    To contrast with South Texas:

Length of Visible Light        14h 03m
    Length of Day  13h 13m
    Tomorrow will be 1m33s shorter.

  • Obviously most of these places are built for "DINKS" (double-income, no kids):

It all depends on where in Canada this place is ... and at that price, I am guessing that it is pretty remote and in a part of Canada that is pretty brutal and isolated in the winter. And I mean isolated in a bad way, as in you are completely on your own. Groceries ultra expensive and difficult to get. Many trades impossible to access. Very limited access to emergency services. Probably not anywhere near the sacraments, either. All of this might not sound so bad, but can be very dangerous when we're talking -40 F winter daytime temperatures for 3+ months of the year. There's a reason this place only costs $170,000. In Canada, anything that's reasonable in price is most likely a rather poor place to live.

Gun rights in Canada are the same across the country, although enforcement varies somewhat. Basically, you need to take a firearms safety course then pay a fee and you can have a basic "Possession and Acquisition License" for most rifles and shotguns. However, I note AR-15s are considered restricted and therefore you need an "upgraded" restricted license. The Restricted License is not worth the trouble and the invasion of your privacy which involved detailed background checks, plus you are only legally allowed to take the rifle or pistol to and from the range and you must pre-register the route with the local authorities. If you are caught off that route, even to get gas, you are going to jail. Depending on where you are in Canada, the police might not check or will let you off with a warning, or they will check you every time they see you at a gas station.

Home schooling depends on the province. Home schooling is legal everywhere in Canada but is easier in some provinces than others.

Vaccinations ... as far as I know, they are mandatory if you want to send your children to public school anywhere in Canada, but otherwise you will not be force. Just another reason why you should never send your children to public school!

Government leaving folks alone ... all depends on location. The more remote and further north you are, the more the government will leave you alone just because there is barely any government up there. The problem is, the more remote you get in Canada the worse the weather and general living conditions get. There's a reason why something like 90% of the Canadian population lives within 100 miles of the US border.
