Title: How many hours per week do you work?
Post by: Geremia on December 29, 2016, 09:10:32 AM
How many hours per week do you work?
If your hours vary quite a lot week-by-week, choose "hard to quantify."
(For some reason the first option says "?40" when it should read "?40".)

Of course, there's WORK and then there's PAID WORK.

Even "PAID WORK" can be a bit ambiguous. Working on your side business doesn't generate $25, $15 or even $5 an hour necessarily -- but it moves you towards making money eventually. Is adding pages to your for-profit blog considered paid work?

Or in my case -- you have a website that makes a bit of money. But spending time working on it, adding features, content, etc. doesn't exactly make you any MORE money. So does maintenance of a home business count as "paid work"?

And of course maintaining your home, taking care of children, going shopping, doing errands, maintaining your grounds (lawn mowing, weedwhacking, cleaning gutters, trimming trees, dealing with flooding, etc.) can't be considered recreation or fun, but is it "paid work"?

I am a early baby boomer born in 1946. Now, retired and living off social
security.
There are some jobs in the area I am now living in. I leave them to the
younger people whom are willing to work, and have families to support.

It depends on the time of year since I help my parents out on their farm...

This past summer I worked an average of 55-60 hours every week.  In the winter it is closer to 10-20, yet I am still helping my parents with odd and ends on my free time.  :-)

Hence the "hard to quantify" option. I was thinking of making your distinction in the poll, but then there'd be 2× as many poll options…

It seems to be a superstition of capitalism (i.e., of "state-sponsored usury") that work can always be quantified. Oftentimes volunteer work is more productive than hourly paid work.

I too am a boomer, 1947, but my SS is not enough to live on so, with only myself to rely on, I work 30 to 35 hours per week and must do so until I die or a miracle happens.
How I truly long to be retired and let someone else have my barely over minimum wage, standing on my feet 8 hours a day, job.
But, as another way I try to look at it, at least I have a job and at my age that is a minor miracle in itself!

On average, significantly over 40 hrs.  Recently it was approaching 80/week.  Now I'm down to a more sane schedule  (close to 40), but I expect it to pick up again soon.

I became very sick because of the level of exhaustion.

My husband is currently working about 60. Most of it is fast, manual labor. The exhaustion takes a real toll on him and family life in general. We're thanking God that he has procured an excellent new job starting in the fall with a substantial pay increase so he doesn't have to work 3 jobs. Just one!

That reminds me of when Dad had jury duty. The lawyers asked him how many children he had. (He had 10) They wanted to know all of our names and dates of birth. When Dad was finnished everybody in the jury room applauded. Then one or the lawyers asked, Does your wife work?" "You bet she does!" someone shouted from the audience.

I work more than 40 hours a week.

Then why did you limit your poll to 40 hours?  Can you not see that many people work far more than 40, including you?

It does not appear that poche created the poll.

Thank you.  Apologies to Poche.

I work in IT, so it can vary, some weeks are slow and I only work 40. Some weeks are insane and I'll have to put in 50 or 55.

I don't know how people work 80hrs a week, I would lose my mind.

Ask a stay-at-home, homeschooling mother.

I meant in terms of working in a corporate environment. Obviously homemakers are "working" all the time, but it's not the same thing in the sense of working at a company, which I believe was implied by this post.

I almost did.  And I definitely temporarily lost my health.  Last calendar year was my single worst year for sheer exhaustion.

To be clear, the work to which I refer as 80 hours does not include any work related to the house or my family.  When our children were little, even then I didn't work these kinds of hours in the home.

My husband works 40 hours a week and goes to school full time, online.

He already has one Masters degree but needs another and full licensure to remain in his job.

For awhile, he had 3 jobs working about 60 hours a week.

As a mother who homeschools, I work all the time.

Last year and especially near the end of the year I was at about 80 hours a week. I was exhausted a lot of the time. 44 hours at my regular job and around 40 hours at my online job.
That's six days a week from 7am to midnight with breaks in between.

This year is gonna be a little different come May I'm gonna cut back.

It's not very nice of me to say, "I'm glad I'm not the only one," because I wouldn't wish my grueling schedule on anyone.  It's just that I can say that I I know intimately how you feel.  Life's been brutal since August.  This year, I won't have much of a respite, because the current season (although down from 80 to 60) is scheduled to last until March or April.

I hesitate to bring up the dreaded V word (vaccines), but I'm considering them for the next work cycle, since the vulnerability of an over-fatigued body cannot be denied.  I don't have that much control over how much I can cut back, since I have an unusual level of skill and reputation for my industry (both a blessing and a curse, obviously), and I am only somewhat/sometimes a free-lancer.  I also work for companies; they control me more.
