  • Taken from a message board -- a busy one, granted -- but it had FOURTEEN PAGES as I write this, and that isn't very usual. It's certainly in the top 1% of topics.

The part in bold is what really makes me shake my head. People actually believe that! Did this guy ever read a book in his life? People were WAY more intelligent in the 20's, and they worked harder too, as a general rule. They didn't have technology to coddle them, and they depended on God, as well as their own minds and muscle -- much more than we do today. Modern man, on the other hand, is completely dependent on "the system" for absolutely everything, which is pathetic.

This is just cyclical, sure medicare is in trouble in 2019, sure we're in a deep hole right now and none of the coming presidential candidates look promising, but your underestimating the will of this country. We are such an advanced civilization compared to our ancestors in the 1920's. It is true that history repeats itself and its true that our future looks bleak right now, but I have a feeling that 10 years from now America is going to be an amazing economy and our big lenders will have learned from their big mistakes and we will move back to being prosperous as ever...maybe 20 years who knows, Im sure China will definitely be a bigger power than us, but we will be major players again. I swear this forum has so many people who seem to be rooting for America to fail. Its sad, they seem to be rooting for $10,000 gold which would basically mean the end of global economy as we know it. Im not holding gold now, but I am definitely not building a fallout shelter and stocking guns and powdered milk and freeze dried food you guys are nuts. True I believe in peak oil, but nobody is coming after your gold coins calm the hell down, America will be fine, matter of fact I'm rooting for gold to crash because that would mean America and the majority of its people are living in a great economy the day will come i promise America will endure we just need better leadership and a start from scratch. You guys should be praying right now for us to get through this not rooting and cheering for us to tank and wipe out peoples entire life savings with us.

  • We are certainly less civilized than we were in the 1920s. Very few families bother to eat together nowadays, unless one counts eating while watching the television together! While the dress and grooming of the people was beginning to become immodest and disordered in the '20s, at least there were still standards instead of there being a free-for-all.

  • Don't worry... it's quite possible that before the 2020's, we'll have a chastisement that will cause us to revisit the 1920's in a lot of ways... and not all of them necessarily bad.

On the other hand, the thought of billions of people suddenly meeting their consciences and the things they may do (eg, rioting, etc...) to avoid hearing them... is kind of scary.
