  • 'How I'm spending my tax refund'

    Spoiling her dogs

For Erika Searl, deciding how to spend her expected $3,500 tax refund was easy.

"I spend it on my dogs every year," said Searl, a New York City resident. "I love my girls. We do everything together."

She plans to spend the cash on teeth cleanings for her two dogs, Cubby and Ginger, and to help pay for their upcoming trips to a dog camp in upstate New York and a friend's "dog wedding" in Connecticut.

  • It's always sad to see a woman whose house could have been a home.

    "Home"
    by the Dixie Chicks

I mistook the warnings for wisdom
From so called friends quick to advise
Though your touch was telling me otherwise
Somehow I saw you as a weakness
I thought I had to be strong
Oh but I was just young, I was scared, I was wrong

    Not a night goes by
    I don't dream of wandering
Through the home that might have been
And I listened to my pride
When my heart cried out for you
Now every day I wake again
In a house that might have been
    A home

Guess I did what I did believing
That love is a dangerous thing
Oh but that couldn't hurt anymore than never knowing

    Not a night goes by
    I don't dream of wandering
Through the home that might have been
And I listened to my pride
When my heart cried out for you
Now every day I wake again
In a house that might have been
    A home
    A home

Four walls, a roof, a door, some windows
Just a place to run when my working day is through
They say home is where the heart is
If the exception proves the rule I guess that's true

    Not a night goes by
    I don't dream of wandering
Through the home that might have been
And I listened to my pride
When my heart cried out for you
Now every day I wake again
In a house that might have been
    A home

  • Seems like a misapplied female nurturing tendency to me.

Normally a woman would spend herself, and her money, on her children.

But for some women who have (for whatever reason) not married long into their 30's, her only family is her dogs.

And factor in that many women are making good money these days... no wonder the pet industry is so huge. "dog dentists", "dog fashion shows" and so forth.

Note: she got a $3,500 refund. That's after getting ONLY a single person exemption. No deductions for spouse or children. So this New Yorker is making some good coin.

  • This Americans tax return will go towards one of these. It'll pay for itself in no time.

  • It can do a million and one things, and it can do it fast. Time is money in my case. I plan on selling a lot of things that I will be making with this one machine. Instead of purchasing and using several machines or tools, I'll just use this one which saves me a significant amount of startup expense.

  • My goal is always to receive no refund and have to pay less than $100.00 at tax filing time.  Unfortunately, it seems that in during the last two years, family income has been more volatile than usual and the withholding tables don't seem to accurately withhold anymore making estimating more difficult than in the past.  Thus, last year I had to make a significant payment and this year I am receiving a significant refund (which I will save to pay for the significant deficit I'm expecting next year even though I'm withholding what the tables say I should).

Ha. Fat sick and nearly dead. What a charming book title!

Good choice on a juicer. I had one, but I think that in the process of my move it got put into the Goodwill pile and toted off accidentally. I miss it.

Are you really thinking of doing a juice fast? I hear that the first few days are brutal.

It's a good docuмentary, if you have Netflix I recommend it.

I picked that one after some research: http://thewirecutter.com/reviews/the-best-juicer/

I *am* seriously thinking about it. No idea if I could LOL

This is very sad on various levels but I'd say she has more money than brains.

  • Myrna, that sounds like a very wise choice. I'm sure that's a weight off your shoulders.

Jen51, May I ask what you will sell that you can make with your Vitamix? We are wondering what we can do to supplement our income. Thank you.
