And much of America's industry is military - which does not necessarily contribute much to the prosperity of the world.

Our whole economy is social welfare and the service industry. A bunch of people cashing government checks and serving latte and selling iPhones to each other.

Plus the multi-billion dollar armaments industry, as you said, plus the multi-billion dollar medical industry, much of which is money spent on unnecessary and/or overpriced surgery and medicines and vaccines against diseases which may or may not even exist.

How much of the problem is the consumer's fault ?

I'm not too informed on economics and all, but it seems if the people of this country banded together and boycotted foreign goods from, at least red China, it would help.

Guess I'm dreaming there, but say for instance anyone who bought a new car in the next 5 years would buy one built here in the states ? Would it be a great impact ?

The problem is that there are more consumers than producers. Take a few minutes and consider the meaning of the term "consumer"... it means someone who consumes or uses (most often perishable) products and resources. If one is consuming, they are not producing. A producer is one who manufactures ( or mines, grows etc.) goods or commodities which are then put on the market for the purchase and consumption or use of the public.

If you have 1 producer producing enough supplies for about 10 people, but the demand consists of 100 people total. The other 95 who require their goods (sooner or later) are going to look abroad (in foreign lands) for those goods. They will spend their money oversees, because the companies producing those goods are located there and not at home. Why is that? Because the government has given enormous tax-incentives to companies that were once based within the US to go oversees and take whatever jobs they provided for the community and give them to townsmen in 3rd world countries where they can also get the same amount of production from their workers for a lesser wage.

So whatever wealth a small town produces does not get circulated in the town because it is being siphoned off to corporations (that purchase and sell goods that are produced outside the country) and transfer that money to foreign communities by purchasing THEIR exports.

Now the solution is simple... build industries that will produce the goods that we require that we are now buying from foreign nations. A boycott will NOT help. If everyone decide to simply stop buying from China etc, we would simply have no goods because we are not producing them. The consumers want their goods NOW... they are not going to wait a year for someone to build a small local factory to produce those goods for them. However, if we built those the industrial infrastructure to manufacture goods locally, you can bet people would buy! It would just be a matter of time before the market demand shifted from foreign imports to locally manufactured products, because you would have the factors such as product quality, availability of jobs in the community, decreased in the cost of many products, and an increase in the town revenues... plus any excess products of quality that are in demand oversees we could export, and we would thus be importing wealth rather than exporting it.
