But please don't confuse "doing something" with silly wastes of time like political rallies or letters to the editor.
I agree that it's (humanly speaking) hopeless to "turn things around" by working within the system.
HOWEVER...
There is plenty we can do. #1 we can "opt out" of the consumer culture, which will do more to end the cronies power than anything else. Spend less -- reduce, re-use, recycle (to use the slogan of the Environmentalists).
You know how Bush told us to go out and spend money (go into debt if necessary) after 9/11 to "be patriotic"? Basically, do the opposite of that. Living beyond our means and bankrupting this country is NOT patriotic!
But we can learn down-to-earth skills, prepare our families (at least a little bit) -- perhaps keep a month of food on hand instead of 3 days (like so many people!). Or if you normally keep a months' worth, go for 6 months worth. This isn't crazy stuff, it's just being prudent.
Same goes for taking your money out of the stock market while the gettin's good. Keep some money in cash at home, and keep some regular (with no collector value) silver coins, or even gold if you have enough money. You can get 4 silver quarters, 10 dimes, or 2 half dollars for around $13 right now. They would make good barter in a crash scenario. Silver or gold ounces work as well for preserving your savings, but they aren't as handy for barter.
