  • Partly common sense of course - but also extremely useful and given things right now I think very pertinent!

  • I have a strange feeling if America runs out of food, people will not care if they get something to eat that is NOT gluten free.

  • The writer of the blog surely hasn't lived in Venezuela or even analyzed it thoroughly. The only mention of water is in the less urgent sense of public utilities. Water, and ten-gallon canisters of clean drinking water, should be the first thing on the list. You can't depend on rain water these days and drinking most ground water will poison you. To survive 3 weeks without water is impossible. Stock up on cow's milk, though...bah.
We conclude logically that religion can give an efficacious and truly realistic answer to the great modern problems only if it is a religion that is profoundly lived, not simply a superficial and cheap religion made up of some vocal prayers and some ceremonies...

  • Daisy is poor and a single mom (I don't know how that came to pass). She has had to "walk the walk" of privation.  Her advice is born of experience.

Her artice mentions storing water, specifically referring readers to detailed sources:

    Quote
Store water (learn the details in THIS BOOK)
Find water that you can purify using an off-grid filtration system (and get extra filters)

My attempt to imbed her hyperlinks in the quote above failed, so you can go to her site for those hyperlinks.

  • To me, it seems all a bit unrealistic. Many of the links lead to very expensive items such as sprouting systems and hydroponic gardens. Anybody who has walked the walk would realise that you can sprout in any old clean glass container. As for how to stay cool without airconditioning, I live in a hot country even in the tropics and have never needed airconditioning. There are dozens of links which illustrate the pampered lifestyle.

I agree you can tell who has ever turned on an empty faucet and who has no concept of water not being there.

If she is that deprived she would not have the money for expensive prepper type of items. Most of the poor here in the USA have access to running water and plumbing even if they are homeless.

Daisy Luther lives on a small organic homestead in Northern California.

So, there are plenty of more thorough prepper lists out there than Daisy's.

    Water is very important.

I lived in MD once when the entire county went without water for 5 days. I was the only one of my neighbors who had stored water. Everyone else went to the store whose shelves were emptied within hours.

Did the NG set up water bottle distribution after a few days?

  • The important thing is to do a little bit each day towards preparedness. That's the way everything gets done, just a little at a time. If you can't afford a lot of expensive gear, don't let that stop you. If you can pick up a case of water bottles (get the ones that are lined with the cardboard) every time you go to the supermarket and stash them under one of the beds in your home, that's so much better than doing nothing. If you pick up an extra can or two of food, that's better than doing nothing, too!

Many prepping skills can be learned over the internet for free. Check out youtube for skills like starting fires and such.

  • At the risk of repeating myself, I give due credit to Daisy.  While she may not be the most authoritative prepper, Daisy pulled herself and her child out of poverty, got off welfare, and has made her family self-sufficient. I think that is laudatory.

She also published these two articles (slightly dated):

  • I also recommend getting a supply of:

    N95 masks

medical tape (to ensure a sealed mask-to-face fit)

    chlorhexidine gluconate

and maybe surgical gloves & goggles.

  • From experience deployed in foreign countries with little to no infrastructure I can't emphasis enough hygiene items and cleaning supplies. More people in my unit were put out of commission from sickness from lack of hygiene then anything else. Proper disposale of human waste and clean common areas are critical when immune systems are bombarded due to sub-standard living conditions and multiple people under one roof.

I would add cleaning products like cleaning vingers, ammonia, detergent powders, and take serious the idea of where you're going to be defecating. Don't just think a bucket you're going to dump out your window is all you need! When you get crippling stomach viruses you'll understand why hygiene is critical as you lose precious hydration and use up what few medical supplies you have.
