Russia and China are just like any other nation, they protect their own interests and want to see their country be the dominant one. Only foolish American libertarians see free trade and free markets as the way to peace. Now I see China defeating us trade-wise but yet again it is America's fault for practicing free trade while China's economic policy is more like Freidrich List.
Also if we see China and Russia as threats consider how WE must look like to the Russians and Chinese. After the Cold War we did not go home at all but instead decided to hand out NATO war guarentees to Eastern European countries whose raison d'etre was to use nuclear weapons against Russia should she invade. We helped oust pro-Russian governments and install pro-American ones and then hector Russia constantly for running a state that does not past muster with the National Endowment for Democracy.
As for the Chinese consider how me must look. The Chinese saw a vast 21st century army in action and during the Balkan crisis an American missile fired at a Chinese embassy in Kosovo. To many Chinese this was no accident. We also promise to defend Japan, Korea, Vietnam, and Taiwan against China, though China considers those lands some of its lost provinces. Also do not the neoconservatives talk about containing China? Is not a world democratic revolution to hasten the collapse of autocracies like China a key mission of Mr. Bush and the neoconservatives?
