Of course I have advocated this for years. Not just gold, but everything -- food, water, electricity, data, videos, music -- if you don't have it in your physical possession somewhere on your property, you don't have it. PERIOD.
That's why I don't use "the cloud". All my data is backed up to BD-Rs, which hold 24 GB each and cost about 75 cents. Flood proof and EMP-proof, and will probably last at least 75 years. The Internet could get restricted, go down, etc. at any point, and then ALL YOU HAVE is what you have on your cozy little property. I'd like that collection to be more than a few things I saved to my latest hard drive in the past few months!
Yes, the stores stock food. But there's no guarantee there will always be food on the shelves. Just look at 2020. Same for all kinds of other supplies and equipment. You can't wait until you NEED it to buy it. You need repair supplies, replacement thing-a-ma-jigs for your various tools, and countless items stored where you can get at them.
Always ask yourself: how hard would it be to make a ____ in a collapse scenario, without access to modern tools, supplies, and electricity? If the answer is "impossible" or "very difficult", might want to buy a couple extra and add them to your Preps...
And if you don't have "Preps", you're Not Gonna Make It.
