I feel the same way about Samuel Rowbotham, who's mentioned in Part 3 of this series. Although he presented himself as a man of faith, I think he mostly had faith in the gullibility of his audiences. He was also, literally, a snake-oil salesman.

There is also the possibility that there are more sinister aims than just that. It could be a meme virus meant to identify and infect those on the far left of the Dunning-Kruger diagram into the right-wing fold of anti-Semitism and isolationism. Any contrary evidence is evidence that that person is either part of the conspiracy or not "woke" to reality, cauterizing off any attempt at education that might reveal their ignorance and ease of being manipulated by someone who flatters their self-evaluated intellect.

Replacing one anti-establishment conspiracy with another isn't exactly convincing. Look at the effect. It is more cultish, where the new believer is told to distrust anyone who tries to lead them away from the iconoclast with the "authentic" version of reality.

Hard to believe that there are some people so incredibly stupid that they actually believe the earth is flat. Even harder to believe that accomplished scientist would waste one moment of their time trying to convince these uneducatable idiots otherwise. Still, well done.

Why do they question factual science? Its a simple mistrust of authority, especially government. NASA is considered a government entity, so they must be lying. Couple that with ignorance and Twitter, and you have the flat Earth phenomenon.
The facetious original "Flat Earth Society" planted the seed in the uneducated.
