CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. — An Israeli spacecraft rocketed toward the moon for the country's first attempted lunar landing, following a launch Thursday night by SpaceX.
A communications satellite for Indonesia was the main cargo aboard the Falcon 9 rocket, which illuminated the sky as it took flight. But Israel's privately funded lunar lander (https://www.nbcnews.com/mach/science/israel-flying-moon-first-lunar-landing-after-spacex-launch-ncna974456) — a first not just for Israel but commercial space — generated the buzz.
Israel seeks to become only the fourth country to successfully land on the moon, after Russia, the U.S. and China. The spacecraft — called Beresheet, Hebrew for Genesis or "In The Beginning" — will take nearly two months to reach the moon.
"We thought it's about time for a change, and we want to get little Israel all the way to the moon," said Yonatan Winetraub, co-founder of Israel's SpaceIL, a nonprofit organization behind the effort.
The moon, nearly full and glowing brightly, beckoned as it rose in the eastern sky. Within an hour after liftoff, Beresheet was already sending back data and had successfully deployed its landing legs, according to SpaceIL.
"We'll keep analyzing the data, but bottom line is we entered the very exclusive group of countries that have launched a spacecraft to the moon," said Yigal Harel, head of SpaceIL's spacecraft program.
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu was watching the launch live from the Israeli control center in Yehud, near Tel Aviv.
"This is a big step for Israel, but a giant step for Israeli technology," he said.
The four-legged Beresheet, barely the size of a washing machine, will circle Earth in ever bigger loops until it's captured by lunar gravity and goes into orbit around the moon. Touchdown would be April 11 at the Sea of Serenity.
NASA's Apollo missions in the 1960s and 1970s took about three days to get astronauts to the moon, but they used monstrous Saturn V rockets. The $100 million Beresheet mission couldn't afford its own rocket — even a little one — so the organizers opted for a ride share. That makes for a much longer trip; the moon right now is nearly 230,000 miles (370,000 kilometers) away.
"This is Uber-style space exploration, so we're riding shotgun on the rocket," Winetraub explained at a news conference on the eve of launch.
The U.S. Air Force also has a small research spacecraft aboard the rocket, for a one-year mission in orbit around Earth.

From what the article says, it seems that the American Falcon 9 rocket will launch with a cargo of three different satellites/spacecrafts attached to it, which includes:
1) a communications satellite for Indonesia
2) a U.S.A.F. research spacecraft, for a one year mission around the earth
3) an Israeli privately-funded lunar lander spacecraft, called Beresheet, which is about the size of a washing machine.
The article states:

So the little Israeli spacecraft will supposedly be picked up by the moon's gravity, and will then be landed on the moon with no power of it's own? How can a little craft be landed on the moon's surface without any power source (combustion or electricity?). Maybe I'm missing something.

Looks similar to the 1969 Apollo lunar lander.
We couldn't make any advances in design in 50 years??

In 2009, the Lunar Module at the Smithsonian got a "facelift."
That's weird. Why would that be?
Also, this bit is weird:
"..interns in the museum's conservation department were on ladders shining the module's metal parts as Paul Fjeld, the contractor for the project, and Amanda Young, a museum specialist, worked on removing the foil, which they then used as templates for cutting the new sheets.
Fjeld, a space artist with NASA's art program who led a similar project on the LM-13 at the Cradle of Aviation Museum in Long Island, and built all the historically-accurate models used in Tom Hanks' HBO series "From the Earth to the Moon," was brought in to do the job.
"It's the Smithsonian's responsibility to preserve the authenticity of the original object as much as possible," he added.
An artist?

Another wierd factoid from the article:
Beresheet will have to move quickly once it lands. It is not expected to last long on the moon’s harsh environment.
The mission will nominally last 2 or 3 Earth days — not a terrible deal, considering the relatively cheap $100 million price tag. Recall that Beresheet is landing at sunrise, when temperatures are not too hot, and not too cold. Those benign conditions won’t last for long; as the Sun rises, so will the temperature, which will cook the lander. The cameras are only designed to withstand temperatures up to 90 degrees Celsius in storage or 85 degrees while in use; lunar midday temperatures can top 100 degrees. If Beresheet manages to survive the heat, the lunar night will likely finish it off.”
Sunrise? What sunrise?? The sun is ALWAYS shining on the face of the moon.
It lands April 11th.

So, a quarter moon is lit up, half light and half dark, EVERYWHERE in the world, both DAY and NIGHT. The moon does not look different in the night than it does in the day. So then what is this "lunar night" that is going to "finish it off"??
