  • This is just a hypothetical question. I am not saying, nor am I implying that someone is going to Hell if they believe wrong  as far as what shape of the earth is.

  • I suggest that you add: None of the above.

I am not convinced the world is a globe, but I also do not believe it is flat.

  • Without even looking, when I saw the poll, I said to myself "Truth is Eternal is behind this."  Lo and behold.
"Be kind; do not seek the malicious satisfaction of having discovered an additional enemy to the Church... And, above all, be scrupulously truthful. To all, friends and foes alike, give that serious attention which does not misrepresent any opinion, does not distort any statement, does not mutilate any quotation. We need not fear to serve the cause of Christ less efficiently by putting on His spirit". (Vermeersch, 1913).

  • God is "awesome".

However, it would be "rilly neet!" if ass-hats realized that everyone answers for all wrongs by simple causation if naught else.

  • What a STUPID poll.

That's like saying, "what would you do if you had to be a Coke or Pepsi fan, and one of them meant going to Hell -- but you didn't know which one!"

God isn't arbitrary, and He is not a tyrant. That is blasphemy!

Only MORTAL SIN can send a person to hell, and it has to, because it completely kills charity/Sanctifying Grace in the soul, drives out the Holy Ghost, and thereby chooses against God. It is a horrible thing.
But it's also real and fundamental.

It's like some foolish people saying, "What if there was a day when all mortal sins were permitted. Which would you commit?" That's a horrible question! We should hate sin because it's fundamentally offensive to God.
God isn't offended by sin "just because" or as some kind of test. It's fundamentally against Him. Why do you suppose there is no sin in God -- and there can't be? Having anti-God traits (a.k.a. Imperfections) is one thing God can't do. He can't contradict Himself, because that is not a perfection.

That's like asking my kids, "If you knew Daddy was in a super good mood, and you KNEW you'd get away with it, which rules would you break and/or which things would you do that normally make him angry?" A good child would answer: "Nothing! None of them!" if they truly loved their dad and wanted to please him.

Anyhow, let's review what it takes to be a mortal sin. So you can receive First Communion next week! (just kidding, but seriously this is stuff we all learn when we're 7 years old). A sin has to
    A) Be a mortal/serious sin -- grave matter
    B) We have to know that it is a sin
    C) We have to fully consent to it.

Flat Earth vs. Globe Earth fails horribly on point B), since none of us can fly up to the troposphere, etc. None of us have personally been to space, much less traveled thousands of miles into outer space. Few of us understand advanced mathematics and physics, to understand intuitively the motions of the stars and heavenly bodies.

I also believe it falls short on point A). Considering it's NOT right in front of our face, we are simply dumb humans who live their lives in a very small sliver of the earth. I wouldn't expect a field mouse on my land to have a full grasp and understanding of the layout of the state of Texas either! So why would God expect us to "figure out" the fundamental nature of the earth and universe? That is a pretty good and fair comparison, too.

Long story short, it's easy to conceive of a person in the state of grace -- a Saint, if you will -- getting it "wrong" on the fundamental nature of the earth and universe. It's one of those things most people can't figure out for themselves with certainty. Knowing that men & women should be together in marriage, ɧoɱosɛҳųαƖity is wrong, stealing is wrong, murder is wrong -- those things are common sense, known in the hearts of all men.

But most important of all, God doesn't play "the shell game" or a game-show with us. We don't have 2 closed doors, A & B, and one of them leading to heaven, and the other leading to hell. That goes for Flat Earth vs. Globe Earth as well as the Pope question. If it's something we can't know with certainty with our puny minds and incomplete information, then God, being perfect Goodness, could not require of us to pass such a "test". It's simple.

  • What if this inaccessible mystery were arbitrarily a Divinely Revealed Truth -- oh, but it wasn't in your Baltimore Catechism either, so you weren't taught it with the rest of your Catholicism or anything...

    Stupid!

Yes, there are things COMPLETELY above our limited, human comprehension (e.g., the Trinity), not just difficult to grasp but actually impossible for us. But they are relevant to the Catholic Faith, God, and our salvation. AND the Catholic Church makes sure that we know all of those things, if we submit to Her authority and be baptized.

You might as well muse, "What if buying an Apple product were breaking a secret 11th Commandment, which also happened to be grave matter?"

Dude, what are you on? You really should cut back, whatever it is you're fumigating your brain with.

Hey, don't drag me into this. I'm not convinced the earth isn't flat. I'm convinced that the earth is at the very center of the universe, and that it doesn't move. "Galileo was Wrong" and "The Principle" convinced me.

I'm only criticizing what I *know* must be criticized (because it's false, labors under a false premise, is ridiculous, etc.) I can be sympathetic (or apathetic) or even agree with a position and still criticize the methods of certain individuals. I am objective, fair, and consistent. I can look at things from 1,000 miles up, or like an alien from Mars who just landed on the planet. (...if aliens existed, that is! hahaha). I spend more time "outside myself" than I do in my own shoes. I have learned that this is an uncommon -- even rare -- gift. I am very grateful to God for this gift.

In this particular case, I'm criticizing this poll.

Anyone who's been on CathInfo longer than a week should know how I feel about those who make DOGMAS out of OPINIONS, or those who anathematize all and sundry because they disagree with their opinion or theological opinion.

  • Hey, don't drag me into this.

    >> I don't think that we refer to the same "this" sir.

I'm not convinced the earth isn't flat.

    >> Nor I.

I'm convinced that the earth is at the very center of the universe,

    >> Likewise.

    and that it doesn't move.

    >> Likewise

"Galileo was Wrong" and "The Principle" convinced me.
I'm only criticizing what I *know* must be criticized (because it's false, labors under a false premise, is ridiculous, etc.)

    >> This is the larger "this" to which I refer, that of not only non, but anti, Catholic method, and simple lack of character, Catholic or otherwise; you "dragged" yourself into it, with all due.

In this particular case, I'm criticizing this poll.
Anyone who's been on CathInfo longer than a week should know how I feel about those who make DOGMAS out of OPINIONS, or those who anathematize all and sundry because they disagree with their opinion or theological opinion.

    >> Even were they dogmas and the opinions actually not, it rarely does any good to beat someone over the head with it; even where an honest contention exists, there's still a Catholic way to do business, and we'te never good enough at doing it even giving our all.

    >> Drowning the horse is one way to make it drink, I suppose.
