  • Very nice.

But better not let the Newchurchers see this.  They'd want to start making chalices this way.

  • I've long thought of getting an inexpensive Central Machinery large wood lathe from Harbor Freight, just never got around to getting one.

Not sure if it'd be an inexpensive keeper rather than just a learning instrument that you have to replace later due to imprecision of its manufacturing, but a lot of cheap tools are just that and at least it might be a good intro to wood turning.

    Sincerely,

    Shin

Harbor Freight is my guilty pleasure.

Low-end tools that get the job done, more often than not.  It's all Chinese-made, but how does one escape that nowadays?

Wives, you will never go wrong, getting your husband an HFT gift card for Christmas or his birthday.  He might even take you out dining and dancing.

  • lol. Yeah I started out buying my tools there. Got quite into it. I used to watch and wait for the 15% off coupons.

Some tools were good some were bad, at least the bad ones were an inexpensive lesson on what design choices make a good tool, so it all worked out overall. And I noticed they do upgrade some of the designs as time goes by for the better.

Sometimes even more quality and expensive doesn't work out. My two DeWalt saws I want to sell, the Miter, I should've gotten a sliding one, the table top, I hate the smaller blade design they're regulating in for safety, it's not big enough for what I want to do. I should've bought the older version. As for better than Dewalt.. I can only dream of a Sawstop.

The Wen drill press I tried.. not good, returned. The Wen detail filing sander? So far great. And too no one else makes one I can find at a decent price. The Wen benchtop band saw, returned. Eastvolt benchtop sander? Great. Probably would be best if I looked at used vintage tools for some of the big more precision things.
    Sincerely,

    Shin

Right, the exact same Chinese tool from Harbor Freight will cost double the price at a Home Depot or Lowes.

They are basically the Radio Shack of tools --- a few items are truly outstanding, most of them are "just okay", and some of them are absolute junk.

I have my parents' old house, which my son and I have been living in for the past year, tricked out with various cheap lighting and motion detection items from HFT, and with the exception of one unit that played out, I've had no complaints (got a couple of solar spotlights from Lowe's, the ones from Amazon were garbage and I returned them).  One reason we moved into that house, was for safety reasons, it was just sitting there on a dark street with nobody living there, a theft and burglary magnet for those so inclined.  I set up a webcam on top of a ladder in the living room, and can look in anytime, and also have Alexa's glass breakage monitor --- my son dislikes Alexa because he has privacy concerns, but he has been staying with his grandma for a few weeks (it's helping both of them come to terms with the loss), and if I'm there by myself, I'm not doing anything that I would mind having an eavesdropper hear.  Right now, with my son and me gone on a few days' vacation, it would be easier to get into Fort Knox without being heard and noticed.  Anyone coming to either door sets off a very loud outdoor alarm (usually indoor, I took it outside while we were gone) that can be heard all over the neighborhood, and lights come on like you're on Broadway.

  • I normaly don't share youtube links, but since I trust you fellows should have ad blockers, filters, image blockers all well set, here's a rather impressive restoration demonstration:

Radio Shack.. Can't go there anymore. No more Tandy 1000's on display that's for sure too.
