What Is The Best Coffee?

  • Just a light thread. What is the best coffee you know of? Regular coffee, not espresso. Some kind that is available online that I can make in a regular drip coffee maker. I do have a grinder so it can be whole bean or already ground. I would like to buy some good coffee, but there are so many varieties I do not know which ones to try. I normally make regular coffee, probably bad coffee. I usually drink Chock Full O' Nuts, but right now I have Maxwell House. I drink a lot. I think this is bad coffee but I still like it. But I would like to try some good coffee.

  • What is "regular" coffee? :laugh1:

I found all coffee that I drank in American to be horrible.
    Ditto England.

We buy from Aldi (best price), 1kg at a time, of medium whole beans and grind them ourselves.

I grew up on tea, but haven't had a cuppa for 25 years.

I  am not addicted; I usually have one cup a day.

  • Buy some coffee from the Traditional Monks in New Mexico!  It's probably blessed too!   :laugh1:

I've tried the below flavor and it's pretty good.

  • Buy organic if you can, Matto. Coffee beans are one of the most chemically sprayed crops

Their white coffee is very good, too (more caffeine, but also more antioxidants).

I drink different kinds and like them all. I almost never don't like the coffee I drink, even coffee that you, Nadir, would think to be horrible. But I do not drink it black, I use milk and a little sugar. I prefer half and half but rarely have it at home. I like cappuccinos best but we do not have an espresso machine at home.

  • Have you tried to buy whole beans from Vassilaros & Sons roasters in Flushing. Check the business and website out. If I lived in their vicinity I would visit the place. They look top-notch. The roaster I buy from writes the roasting date on the package and usually I can get a bag as fresh as two days. Nothing like it.

  • I know. ;). I checked out La Colombe coffee roasters as another option for you but they advertise that they are temporarily closed. Plus they are mostly in Manhattan, not Queens.

  • We get Folger's for quotidian use (economical), but I prefer Gevalia or Jacobs.  Cafe Bustelo is also good, for a more robust cup.  I also like Eight O'Clock and Seattle's Best.  We always got Eight O'Clock from A&P when I was growing up.

Postum is also good for those times when caffeine just won't do.  Post discontinued it several years back, but a small company (if I had to guess, they're probably Adventist-connected) in Charlotte NC started producing it again.  It is just a little "off" from what Postum was when Post made it, but close enough.  You do have to put it into a mug of cold water, dissolve it, then heat it in the microwave (or whatever you heat it in) --- when you stir it into hot water, it makes clumps of brown goo.  Design flaw, but at least you end up with basic Postum, which is more than you'd have if someone hadn't started making it again.

  • Matto: If you are adventurous why not try COMMUNITY COFFEE (with chicory) from New Orleans, LA. Search Community Coffee and look at their menu for on line ordering. You won't find whole bean, just ground. I enjoy coffee and chicory for a change. If you try it let me know your opinion.

I had Cafe du Monde which is coffee with chicory from New Orleans, so I imagine it is similar, and I liked it. They say it is best when prepared as cafe au lait.

Does ALDI have good coffee? Forgive me if I am wrong, but don't you live in Australia? I live in New York. The ALDI I used to go to in New York was a very low end store, selling mostly to people on SNAP, the cheapest food available that was not poison, so they did not have good coffee or good anything. But I think ALDIs elsewhere are not like that.

Don't know about Aldi, but with things from Aldi in general, sometimes they're not fit to bring out of the store, sometimes they're "just okay", and sometimes they're really pretty good.  It just depends on what you buy.  I had some wine the other day, not the best I've ever had, but definitely worth $2.49 (!), I'd get it again.  Good with lasagna.  Their tomato juice is excellent.  And their little hamburger buns, for about 9 cents apiece, are not bad at all.

Their granola gave me gas in a big way.  Avoid.  (But if I were ever going for one of those mail-order PhDs in theology I was reading about on here recently --- the ones you can get if you can fart into a paper bag --- I might want to reconsider.  Could be a plan :jester:)

Fun fact: Aldi and Trader Joe's are the same company.  Aldi is the poor relation and TJ is more upmarket.  TJ chicken tikka masala is almost restaurant quality, but you have to get two of them, to have a decent-sized meal.
