And when you get the new account (if they want other numbers you have recently used, tell the person at the new service that you have been out of the country, serving with the Armed Forces) To be even safer, you might want to have an unpublished number. If you have a new number under a new name and an unlisted service, you might also wish to add a caller ID to your service.

    Isn't that lying?

That struck me as well, Joan. As Chant points out, people are morally obliged to pay debts they may incur.

  • I just thought some of it was interesting -- especially in a world like today where privacy is a valuable commodity that must be fought for tooth-and-nail.

Actually, it might be permissible to use "mental reservation" in cases where the company doesn't have a right to the information. As far as I know, that's the only time you can use "mental reservation".

Holding back the truth to someone who deserves to have the information is simply lying -- a form of injustice.
