I found a place online that only charges $1.50 a pack for heirloom seeds -- no more (or less) than the big box stores charge for their hybrid seeds!

So you don't have to *pay extra* for heirloom seeds.

The number of years a seed remains viable *at room temperature* varies by seed. Some seeds it's a year or two; others last 5 years or more. Naturally, the larger seeds last longer.

Seeds must last a lot longer when frozen; that's why you have those seed banks up in the far north such as the "Doomsday" seed vault.

Interesting discussion about seeds, I will search for that seed link Matthew, but just in case I can't find it, could you post it here.

I want to order my seeds now, while we still can.

Baker Creek Heirloom Seeds

http://rareseeds.com/shop/

They seem to be no more than Park Seed and other catalogs which *don't* specialize in heirloom seeds.

My first year gardening (in my own house, at least) I ordered a bunch of seeds from Park Seed -- they were $2, $2.50, etc. per package. About the same as Baker Creek -- at least the latter offers Heirloom seeds!

Let's just say I don't feel like I'm spending much more to get heirloom -- unless you compare it with "clearance" pricing at the big box stores. I sometimes get those just as a bonus.

Thanks, and isn't it so that with the Heirloom seed, we can save the seeds for another planting without fear of unhealth plants.   Might also be another bartering tool.

I went to M.D. Creekmore's site to see where Matthew got the OP. It is http://www.thesurvivalistblog.net/

I voted on the poll that the "fall" would be coming in three to five years. I'm a big believer in inertia. Actually, I believe that Western Civilization collapsed in the 1960's; for the past fifty years we've been running on fumes. I think we can limp along for another few years, though, even through the rest of Obama's term. Then somebody will be elected who will put a few bandaids on the gushing artery, and death will be staved off for a little while longer. Eventually, though, the patient will expire in a pool of his own poisoned blood.
