  • Nearly all theologians agree that only the baptized are members of the Church; it's just that many claim that people can be "inside" the Church without being members of the Church.  I call this "undigested hamburger" ecclesiology, just like food can be in the stomach without having become part of the body.

This Pope Gregory XIII info is from The History of the Popes by Ludwig von Pastor if anyone is interested. The history of the popes, from the close of the middle ages : drawn from the secret Archives of the Vatican and other original sources; from the German (obrascatolicas.com)

Lad, then wouldn’t you categorize the following as “undigested hamburger ecclesiology” also?

The Church teaches that to be a member of the Church one must be baptized, profess the True Faith, and not be cut off from the Church by legitimate Ecclesiastical authority.

In the internal forum one can be a Satanist, but outwardly still be a member of the Church.
For what doth it profit a man, if he gain the whole world, and suffer the loss of his own soul? Or what exchange shall a man give for his soul?

No, that's the corollary.  Such are members of the body, but dead members.  It's as if frostbite or gangrene set in part of the body, and the flesh was dead.

"Undigested hamburger" refers to the notion of something being IN the body but not part of the body.  Dead members are a part of the body despite being dead.
