Title: survival and homesteading
Post by: tradlover on August 09, 2011, 08:11:39 PM
Is homesteading a sure bet to protect one from catastrophe?

In this life, nothing is a sure bet.

If I were one of the walking "dead" from the city during a SHTF time with any degree of intelligence, the first places I would lead my other walking "dead" gangs would be the homesteads.

This is why I've suggested towns of 'about' less than 50000. Living alone is dangerous in such times. Being able to share defense, armaments, take turns with watches and generally be able to summon a large enough force to repel numbers (within reason, a paramilitary organization that was well trained, equipped and battlehardened would still be extremely difficult to deal with).

Sure, but where are you going to find a town with all (50k) actually meeting the prepping and helping requirements? I'm sure with a town that big there would be plenty of fending of from the inside anyways, don't you think?

Well, in the other thread where I talked about this last month, I gave several details, but I will clarify a couple things here that might answer your question:

1-50,000 **or less**  :)

50K is a maximum, the maximum population that can be expected to:

2- Reorganize the town/city to adapt to the new circuŠ¼stances. I talked about this aspect a bit more in the other thread (I forget the title, it was last month but I had a few lengthy posts in it with important details), but basically no, you cannot expect 50K, or anywhere near that number to all be preppers, you'd be lucky to have a tenth of that all be preppers. The point of a smallish town is that it's still small enough to change how it operates, they could reallocate people and skills and still have a prayer of feeding them (a prayer) by growing locally when supply lines and deliveries from farms stop. A 50K or smaller community is quite likely to be surrounded by farmland (if you follow my other location cretiria besides population) actually, or at least arable land. 50K can survive, with cooperation (there would be challenges) and reallocating jobs and having some folks change profession etc to more relevant occupations.

So basically, don't seek 50K, that's the max! That many people would not be preppers, but they could reorganize.

Limiting yourself to 100% preppers limits the size of the community, and what you gain in preperedness you might lose in defensibility, however well armed a community of 50 preppers might be, an 'army' of a couple hundred roving bikers would probably overrun them, especially once hostages were taken (family members).

You also limit yourself to a bunch of weirdos. You should meet more preppers. Some of them are fantastic people, totally normal and well-adjusted, some of them I wouldn't want near my family, I might take my chances with the paramilitary mobs :D

Tehachapi, CA, 93561.

Lots of conservatives, mostly white town on the edge of the mojave desert. TOwn is at the bottom of a valley floor with lots of nooks and crannies.

You want a militia town? Move there. Or Caliente. Being at the foot of the Sierra Nevadas offers unique advantages.

You really ought to read my other posts in the finding a suitable town thread...

Tehachapi has a massive prison, and it has all 4 levels (that means Max and SHU, what other states call 'Supermax')

It's also only 37 miles from the much larger (hundreds of thousands of people) Bakersfield. 47 miles east, you have the tiny hamlets of Lancaster/Palmdale, only another several hundred thousand within 2 days on foot (or 45 minutes on the 14/58/

Most of the people there are state employees (prison guards) who lack any useful skills to produce food or a provide a needed service (without a gov't check, these state workers wouldn't even be there)

Agriculture there, due to the bitter cold, (before the orchards were decimated) *required smudgepots*. I hope you have a source of petroleum in mind or if you can't smudgepot plan big bonfires in your cropfields (don't catch your trees on fire!!)

The culture there changed drastically in the last 30 years. They're not hardy mountain folk anymore, they're refugees from Los Angeles and the place is dotted with tract homes.

So,...no, this would be a bad example.

St. Mary's, Kansas or Post Falls, Idaho for me.

   Why:

1) I would prefer a town of 5k or less

2) In towns of that size, you are more likely to get to know one another and

3) 1/2 the population in those towns would naturally band together, meeting at the Church to discuss defense plans, etc, and

4) They would feel a moral compulsion to defend eachother as "their people."

5) In either of those two towns, the best place to live would be right in the center of town (i.e., where the largest concentration of strength is).

6) It would be quite the opposite in any other town.

So there's my 2 cents :farmer:

Unfortunately, they are by their very nature, large targets for evil ones, regardless of catastrophe. When they start the persecution of Churches, priests, and Catholics, I suspect larger Traditional communities and Churches will be the first on the list of who to take down.
