  • We watched some videos this evening on food storage.

The one I found most interesting was on canning meat--beef, chicken, ham, whatever. I didn't even really know that was possible, and she made it sound quite easy and very effective at maintaining quality. (I'm not interested in storing a ton of SPAM just to have some meat on hand.)

Have any of you ever done this?

1-My grandparents did this. They're both passed away so I can't ask them, but the ones on my dad's side are still alive and one of them probably knows how (similar rural background). Anyhoo, I ate it as a kid a few times, and it was fine-- I am alive after all.

    I'll ask the other side.

2-I did it when I was in my early 20's as well, although I have no idea if the way I read how to do it and tried it was the way the grandparents did it that I knew worked (because I ate theirs plenty of times). It didn't occur to me back then to ask them how.

3-I'd look for LDS (Mormon) resources on this--they're all about it, I bet the about.com site on LDS food storage has info on this. You'll likely find some Mormon's personal/family page that talks about it and it'll be a process they've actually done or use themselves, so it's 'field tested.'
