Title: Salt water purification
Post by: s2srea on August 14, 2011, 10:25:05 AM
I was thinking... (uh oh!) do you think it would be a wise investment to invest in a sea water purification system? Think about it. Even if you didn't live near the ocean, it might be a wise investment (if you're able to afford it). If you had that and a boat, and some sort of way to catch ocean fish, you'd be set.

I haven't seen much on the market in the way of actual purifiers though. Has anyone considered this?

This looked very interesting, inexpensive, simple, small and independent:

A solar still is a time-tested method to generate potable water, even from certain contaminated sources. A solar still uses the rays of the sun to distill water from the ground, plants, and virtually anything that contains moisture. An advantage is that impure sources, which could not normally be consumed, may be used to produce drinkable water. These include urine, salt water, and non-poisonous plant material. For survival/emergency situations only.

Some interesting things this seapanels can do:

Solar heat water for showers, cooking & cleaning: Save hundreds on your utility bills. Perfect for vacation homes and camping

Distill bottle-quality water (automatic mode): Remove fluoride, arsenic, impurities and chemicals from city water and well water.

Distill up to 1.5 gallons of water per day for emergencies and disasters (manual mode): Turn ANY source of water into bottle-quality water, including ocean water, brackish water, contaminated well water, and standing ground water.

Always have 20-gallons of emergency water: Perfectly fresh and can't drain back to empty city water lines.

They almost look simple enough, that if you got one, you may be able to build yourself.

I wonder if a still would work.
It could serve double duty.

You'd be the most popular guy in the bunker.
