In the early days of the Church, when it was necessary, the Holy Ghost distributed the "Charismatic gifts" to various persons: prophecy, tongues, interpretation of tongues, teaching, etc.
The definition of Charismatic gift is: a grace that is given for the benefit of OTHERS.
For example, the High Priest Caiphas prophesied that Jesus Christ would die for His people, etc. Now Caiphas was the true High Priest even though he personally was in mortal sin. Also, his prophecy was a true prophecy; he didn't prophesy using the devil's power just because he was a bad guy.
Long story short: a bad guy can be given gifts that are beneficial to others, even as the person himself loses his soul. Like St. Paul worried about: "Lest I, after preaching to others, might myself become a castaway."
This happens all the time with priests of God. How many priests and bishops are lost, yet how many people are saved by those same priests' confessions, sermons, and Masses said?
Fast forward to today: We're in the twilight age of the Church, when the Faithful are dwindling away and losing heart on a daily basis. Might a few souls be receiving gifts and special graces from God? Perhaps. Archbishop Lefebvre seemed to have received a special gift of prudence. Some of the gifts might be "less than tabloid-worthy" while others might be more "impressive".
