  • The air literally hurts your face right now. I went out for two seconds... they are saying to not let kids be out longer then four minutes, and to put them right into a heated car if you are going somewhere. It’s extremely dangerous for them..

So, we are practicing our homemaking skills, and working on American history, English, reading, and most importantly memorizing our prayers.
My two toddlers have been crying for the swing set. They don't understand that I won't let them out for their own good. :( We're holding out until Thursday. Getting a little stir crazy in here!
Religion clean and undefiled before God and the Father, is this: to visit the fatherless and widows in their tribulation: and to keep one's self unspotted from this world.

  • A cold front blew in last night -- we had really high winds where we live.

Now it's 37 degrees and it's only going to make it up to 53 today! And tonight it's going down to 37.

    Brrrr!

(I'm in Texas by the way, and I'm joking here...I know these temps aren't cold. I'm from Illinois so I know what real cold is)
Wow, your high is more than a hundred degrees warmer than what it is here (after you factor in the windchill).
"Be kind; do not seek the malicious satisfaction of having discovered an additional enemy to the Church... And, above all, be scrupulously truthful. To all, friends and foes alike, give that serious attention which does not misrepresent any opinion, does not distort any statement, does not mutilate any quotation. We need not fear to serve the cause of Christ less efficiently by putting on His spirit". (Vermeersch, 1913).

Haha! Well, My husband is still against the idea, but I won’t waste the time God has given me. I asked for more time with the children. And God delivered  ;)

  • Often times I choose the coldest day of the year to test my rifle's cold weather functionality. I'll leave it and the ammo outside over night. This morning, on my way to work, when I threw it in the bed of my truck it was -25˚ F, not including wind chill. Inserting the mag on a closed bolt was a little tough and manually charging the first round was sluggish, I had to help it. Other than that, and being careful to not breathe on the scope, my sass ran fine.

This was the coldest I've ever gotten to try at.

What I do when my kids are being unreasonable like that: I give them a sample. Let them go outside for 30 seconds, 1 minute, 2 minutes, or whatever is safe/reasonable. That way, they'll appreciate the indoors as they should. Believe me, staying inside will soon be THEIR idea! hahaha

Even for much older kids, this works for the classic "it's too hot in here" in the summer and "it's too cold in here" in the winter.  You have to recalibrate their sensors. Nothing like a sample of 32 degrees to make you appreciate a 67 degree home. And as uncomfortable as a dry 82 degrees (air conditioned home) might be, a humid 99 outdoors feels much worse. But you have to venture outside for a few seconds to get that recalibration/reality check.

  • Was -2°F here (Central Suffolk Co. NY) at 3:45 AM.  Dry as a bone, crisp, hazy with blowing snow.  I love it!  It reminds me of younger days in St. Lawrence Co. NY.  Only there, temp one morning was -47°F, four feet of snow with huge sand dune-like drifts.  That's actual temp., none of this "real feel" wimpy nonsense!  And yes, I carried an emergency kit in my car.  Still do, although I have little need for it where I currently live.

The coldest I've seen and went out in (briefly!), -56°F, Depuyster, NY, 1981.  At least that's what it read on the thermometer outside the barn.  We actually brought a cow and her 12 hour old calf into an unused bedroom in the house, for fear they'd not survive the night.  (Not recommended unless an emergency!)

You can do similarly with boredom. My kids only ever got bored once in a lifetime.
    Mum, I'm bored!
Well, darling, you can wash that 20 kilo bag of potatoes over there.

Thank you, Matthew and Nadir for this seasoned advice! Next cold snap I'll pull that one out of my pocket, haha. It's suppose to be 65 degrees here this weekend. It was 0 just a couple days ago!

We learned real quick to never say, or even let on that we were bored when we were kids - because that meant doing the dishes, pulling weeds, cleaning toilets, washing windows, vacuuming, sweeping, or whatever else popped into my mom or dad's mind to take away our boredom! God, how I miss my parents!

  • In Moscow the rule is that you don't let kids play outside if it is colder than -15C which is plus 5F

    http://siberiantimes.com/other/others/news/n0810-children-get-a-day-off-school-but-only-because-thermometer-hits-minus-45c-or-below/

In Northern Siberia they would never play, so they have other limits.
