    What is a polar vortex?

    Explanation from Wikipedia:

Each polar vortex is a persistent, large-scale cyclone, circling the planet's geographical poles. The bases of the two polar vortices are located in the middle and upper troposphere and extend into the stratosphere. They surround the polar highs and lie in the wake of the polar front.

I know, this is hard to understand. Sorry, I am no PhD.

  • It used to be called "winter weather", but that doesn't have a scientific ring and can't be used to promote "climate change".

Nope, 'polar vortex' is a real meteorological term for like, unseasonably cold, prolonged chills. Here in Minnesota just 2 years ago, it was consistently -50 or -60F for weeks a a time. It got cold enough that the entire state cancelled school for the first time in several decades. They called it just that - a 'polar vortex'.

Yep, Of course a "polar vortex" is something real, just as a high pressure system and low pressure system are real meteorological terms.  That doesn't mean that it's not part of what gives us our winter weather.  Consider that Wikipedia records the lowest January temperature in Minnesota at -57 F in both 1904 and 1996.  Just because you had a bad winter doesn't make a polar vortex some new crazy event.  A polar vortex is not a new phenomenon.  It is merely part of what constitutes "winter".

But the use of the term today is being used to make people believe that what is normal is part of the horrible "problem" of "climate change."
