  • For concealed carry I prefer the IWB "Summer Special" developed by the late Bruce Nelson, now in an improved "Summer Special 2" configuration that Bruce's widow Sandy Froman licensed to Milt Sparks, but you specified OWB, so the SS2 doesn't qualify.

If you can find a suitable used rig made by the late Ernie Hill, snatch it up. Otherwise I'd look at the OWB options offered by Milt Sparks. Much of one's choice is a matter of personal preference (preferred rake, preferred retention, etc.) and one's body habitus (skinny v. obese). https://www.miltsparks.com/outside-the-waistband/

I still have my competition rig from Ernie, built for 10mm Glock with an open-front peg holster, screw-adjustable tensioner for retention, and a pair of double mag pouches each angled perfectly for sequential weak-hand use. Leather work and stitching is handsome. Nobody alive today makes anything close. If you see me wearing it in town, you know that the balloon has gone up and we are Mad Max WROL.

There are some competition speed rigs that are quite adjustable, but made from polymer and really ugly. Functional, but—Did I mention?—really ugly: CR Speed "WSM II" Holster https://www.crspeed.co.za/WSM-II

  • I know you said OWB, but if you could entertain the idea of IWB, a Sticky Holster might do it for you:

    https://stickyholsters.com/lg-4-large-sticky-holster.html

The Sticky Holster is one of those things about which you say "it shouldn't work, but it does".  I use one for my Ruger SR9c, which is a tiny little gun, 23 ounces (versus 28 ounces for the Colt King Cobra) and pretty much the same as the Ruger LCP, only chambered in 9mm instead of 380 ACP, and without the LCP's preposterously heavy trigger pull.  As a practical matter, though, I carry the SR9c loose in my pocket, it barely even imprints, and only use the Sticky Holster for storing it in the center well of my car.

Got to wonder why they named a gun after a brand of malt liquor :clown:

  • You are most welcome.

Out of curiosity, is there a reason you prefer OWB?

I figured IWB would be too uncomfortable for revolver carry due to the inherent width of the cylinder, and, although I'm a lean man, having to adjust my pant around the revolver didn't appeal to me, but I am now seriously considering IWB, thanks to you and SimpleMan for your input. I may just get both IWB and OWB holsters.

    Interesting.

May I offer this?  Fit the gun and carriage to the mission instead of forcing a particular gun into a mission for which it is—dare I say?—ill-suited.

Your "mission" is concealed carry for protection. Why not choose a gun that offers easy concealment for protection instead of choosing a gun that is inherently difficult to conceal (and reload)?

Though I will occasionally up-gun, I have found myself trending towards better concealment.

For decades I swore I would carry nothing less than .40S&W, so carried a Glock Model 23 for those decades (it was also my competition pistol). Then I down-sized to the Glock Model 27 40S&W… then a Glock 43 9mm… and nowadays a Seecamp .32ACP in a pocket, no holster at all, more often than many other options.

    Just some food for thought.

That Seecamp .32ACP is one tiny little gun.  I hadn't heard of it till now.  How do you like it?

Bud's Gun Shop in Lexington, Kentucky, truly a good company with which to do business, has it:

  • I really like the Seecamp .32 ACP. There is a same-sized .25 ACP version, but .25 ACP terminal ballistics are so anemic that the .25 ACP is a non-starter. There is also a slightly larger and heavier .380 ACP version.

    PRO
    • really small
    • really lightweight
    • so flat that it never prints in even the lightest summer clothing
    • heavy enough trigger pull that pocket-carry does not require a holster
    • not a rimfire

    CON
    • only feeds hollow-points, so cannot use the Buffalo Bore 72gn +P hard cast lead or inexpensive FMJ practice ammo
    • has a really annoying magazine safety, so the slide cannot be racked or the chamber emptied unless the magazine is in
    • heel magazine release
    • "only" 6+1 capacity
    • not a 9mm or 10mm :-)

The North American Arms Guardian is a close copy, almost as small and lightweight, has a standard magazine release, does not have the magazine safety, so is more easily emptied, and does feed +P and FMJ rounds. Largely because the NAA's manual-of-arms is simpler and more consistent with her other pistols, I bought one for our daughter to carry completely inconspicuously at work.

Because of my COVID-related hearing loss, I gave some thought to having a custom threaded barrel made for either the Seecamp or the Guardian, but decided one of our Glock 43's with a Gemtech Aurora II can was a better option at that form factor, though still not practical for on-body carry.

Different handguns for different environments/activities. At least with revolvers, the first 6 shots are almost guaranteed to fire. Not the case with a semi because it could bobble due to pocket lent, extraction issue, stove piping, mag spring problem, etc. Also, FBI stats indicate majority of civilian shooting confrontations are 6 shots or less. A 6 shot revolver is likely to suffice. I still carry a semi but for situations, environments and time lapses where a revolver is more difficult to conceal. I do appreciate your input and wisdom.
