Title: On a Light note-hopefully
Post by: Belloc on August 08, 2012, 01:47:44 PM
Apart from religious reading, audio, video...

what does everyone like to read, listen to and watch?

As far as reading goes, my bookshelf(s) are lined with pretty much any type of field guide you can think of. The ones that have been sitting out on my coffee table (which means I'm reading them frequently) are herbs and wild edibles, tallgrass prairie wildflowers, fungus, and stars. I'm also flipping through cookbooks a lot, probably too much, actually. I get a unusual amount of enjoyment out of reading grocery adds, because I love love love menu planning mixed with good deals. Oh and I read a number of magazines on organic farming and homesteading.

As far as listening goes, it's a rare day that I listen to the traditional type of radio- I don't even have one in my house, and I like the silence in the car. However, I listen to Pandora radio a lot- usually tuned into a classical station.

No T.V., but I watch a movie every now and then. Some favorties include: LOTR, Pride and Predjudice, and Princess Bride.

What is CP, anyway?

Sometimes late night radio can be interesting. Coast-to-Coast AM has had some
"good" shows, so to speak, but it's a bit much to hear it every day. It takes a lot
of mental filtering to overlook the rather ongoing insults to one's sensus catholicus.
And the ADS? Just stay close to the volume knob so you can turn it down for ads.

I don't have TV but watch DVDs from time to time. I like to see movies about
the Church in the 30's and 40's. Those were the days! I watched the DVD "Dreams
From My Real Father"
about Obama and his ties to Frank Marshall Davis. That was
interesting. It's too bad the director made it so much like a fiction piece. It's like
Malachi Martin style: you never know what's real and what's fantasy. Oh, and
look out for the soft porn. Why am I surprised? I should hope they won't be
showing this in high school classrooms.

The online videos offered for free on Fatima.org are really interesting. OOPS! Not
supposed to mention religion! Okay, let's see..........

I used to be a fan of comedy shows but now I can't see them without noticing their
temptations to sin. Laurel & Hardy used to be pretty good, if you can overlook the
sɛҳuąƖ innuendos which are pretty well disguised, to be "acceptable" to our culture of
the time. There really isn't any comparison today in popular culture. We are really
living in a cesspool of moral decay.

I've got a friend who's a fan of Westerns. The conspicuous disregard for the value
of human life is all through them. The "stars" of the show never have any religious
ties, but loyalty and courage, without any reference to faith in God, are held as a
kind of deity.

In America you get this impression that it's okay to be a honorable and upstanding
without any faith in God. Conversely, anyone who practices his Catholic faith openly
gets chided and ridiculed for it, especially when it opposes popular attitudes.

So here is this thread, hoping to do just that: let's make a religious forum into a
secular swill bucket, and have a good time for a change, okay?

Oh Jen51, you are every shade of awesome. :) The cookbooks, the grocery ads...I always think it's just me.

Lately I've been reading all about fermented foods. The health benefits and how to do it. I love to can, but fermentation is a new world to me.  How strange is it to get excited about sauerkraut?? :)

I love canning, too. How strange is it to get excited about sauerkraut?? Well, maybe a little strange to the modern american world (and who cares what they say), but I think it's completely normal to our nature as women. It is SO exciting to accomplish something for the first time after reading about it, and attempting it. For the two of us, this accomplishing just happens to be in the form of things that deal with food. :)

Gosh, I don't think I've read anything that isn't religious in a while.  I'm reading fiction for the first time in years and it's still religious, Malachi Martin's Vatican.  Well, it's "officially" fiction.

For music, same thing.  I listen to jazz and a lot of instrumental stuff that isn't religious per se.  The ocassional indie pop and rock as well.

For video, anything that's moral.  Lately I've been watching a lot of ESPN's 30 for 30 series on Netflix Streaming.

Odd, did not know gardening was a swill bucket and sorry if you felt hamstringed about mentioning religion, odd my post did not say "dont do that". just wondering what clean cut things people like to do when not praying, religious practices........silly of me to wonder

Emer, as you were a real rude person on other threads and rather a uptight bitch and false-pious, went ahead and hide you-everyone happy, now we will go ahead bck to the  :really-mad2: and not try to have a meaningful, light exchange for a break-constant white-knuckling and stomach notted anger, so much the healthier aint it

then again, Emer was kind enough to speak for everyone in
-assiling my fortune to have a job
-some time, as my hard works allow to talk to others
-and letting me know how long I have been away and how the group, represented by her, was glad I was gone and not wanting me back, me thinks/

harsh to her? I respond as I am treated and since a light hearted exhange is not welcomed, either, then lets all just resort to  :light-saber: :fryingpan: :nunchaku:
So much healthier, are ya happy Emer? do hope so........

I see the 1 1/2 yrs I was away-working, losing weight, getting in shape, able to afford to travel abroad, shop organically and soon, hopefully, to pay off the house-well, glad to see some things dont change, EMer,  I now recall, you were a self rightous tight ass then, still are....., no changes......
ah, feeling much Traddier now......nothing like a good  :fryingpan: :cussing:

please, just delete the next thread if I try to discuss some everyday, lighter sided things......silly me.....Eamon, can sort see his issue.the world is getting nastier and I guess, soo too trads......well, cant beat 'um, dont want to join

Belloc,
The forum has been very peaceful without you!  It was a war when you were here last.  Read your post again.   Most of it is illegible ramblings, and then the insults.  Those of us who have been here a long time remember you!  Please refrain from your rude  impure coments, which do not reflect a trad Catholic.

In fact, that being said, why dont you go away again?   :laugh1: :laugh1:

Isn't the negative reaction to the original post a bit extreme, considering there are probably hundreds of similar threads on the forum?

Read: Poetry (English: Southwell, Raleigh, Teasdale, the anonymous author of the airs that Dowland set to music; Chinese: Li Yu, Kao Shih)

Listen: Baroque (Bach, Handel, Vivaldi, Weiss, Corelli), Romantic (Chopin, Liszt, Henselt, Strauss, Schubert, Rachmaninoff, Bortkiewicz, Granados, Poulenc)

Watch: T.V. is not to my taste, but I have lately enjoyed David Suchet's portrayal of Hercule Poirot in some of the film adaptations of Agatha Christie's novels.

I want to enjoy fishing, but I haven't had the opportunity yet. I'm afraid I would damage my hands and be unable to play piano.

thanks for rpelying in the spirt meant by this thread to start with...

no, not extreme, when one attacks you, is flat out nasty and does not know what is talked about, but singles you out and flat out refuses to read other posts to get an idea of what is going on to start  with......

I tried to give her some insight and explanation. That did not work.......then she accuse me of being what I was refuting to others or trying to. For no reason, I then get attacked for working and having some time to post here. THen, one presumes to speak for others and tell you "we did not like you boefore, not like you now and you are not welcomed here" sort of thing......when I had not attacked her, let alone in any earnest........a timeline would prove helpful ,but I do not have that time to do one.....

Like the music you noted, cannot play an instrument worth a flip (very left brained afriad) and like you, enjoy the Suchet Poirot-had read that the Christie family had actually approached him to do the show.....he does a good job......

always great to see a good mystery, also, listen to old radio programs....

by all means, protect those gifted hands.....dont blame you there, like a surgeon....

A few gardeners close to me were complaining about the same thing recently.  We were told that overwatering (ironically) makes the plants grow big and green but no fruit/vege is produced.

Our catfish are so big, it's possible for a person to experience himself what it was like for Jonah livin in the whale.

Take it from an honest fisherman.

I can tell you how.

You have to pollinate a female flower with one of the male flowers which grow on long stems.

The female flowers are on a little baby squash attached to a short stem on the plant. So your squash is already there - it just needs pollination to grow.

When the blossoms are open, pick a male flower and peel off the petals, in thirds, like a banana, so that the pollen covered stamen is totally exposed. Since they just get in the way, peel off the thin little leaves on the base of the flower also.

Now pinch off or peel open the female blossom just enough to allow you to pollinate the stigma inside (that's the top yellow piece in the flower's center).

Take the male flower's stamen and thoroughly rub the pollen onto the stigma, and the pollination will be complete.

Do this before 11am while the females are receptive, and pollinate with 2 male flowers when you can.

I should mention this technique also works with all melons, watermelons, and cucuмbers.

It's just a little more difficult because the blossoms are smaller.

Pumpkins are the same species as squash.

I read a lot of ancient apocryphal texts for fun, lol. I also work at a soup kitchen and teach brain damaged children their religious education.  I am an avid gardener, and I live in the woods, so it is always a race to see which species gets the produce. Talk about squash blossoms--I had a row of lovely orange blossoms in a row one day, and by the night's end, they were deer feed, lol.

This year's unusual heat in Chicagoland has made for many green tomatoes--they won't ripen.  I bought a spray that helps pollinate blossoms, and have done better lately,

I think religious people need to be well-rounded. You can love God and your neighbor mowing the grass...or singing...or pushing kids on a swing. My Grandma always said you were closest to God when you are on your knees growing vegetables. I get it--I do my best conversing when out in the soil.

Responding to the OP:

Music:  Classical, folk (especially Celtic), Jazz, Bluegrass, and that rock and roll delicately called "classic" so as not to offend people of a certain age by calling it "oldies".

Books:  History, science, biography, science fiction/fantasy, and crime novels/mysteries.
