Apart from religious reading, audio, video...

what does everyone like to read, listen to and watch?

As far as reading goes, my bookshelf(s) are lined with pretty much any type of field guide you can think of. The ones that have been sitting out on my coffee table (which means I'm reading them frequently) are herbs and wild edibles, tallgrass prairie wildflowers, fungus, and stars. I'm also flipping through cookbooks a lot, probably too much, actually. I get a unusual amount of enjoyment out of reading grocery adds, because I love love love menu planning mixed with good deals. Oh and I read a number of magazines on organic farming and homesteading.

As far as listening goes, it's a rare day that I listen to the traditional type of radio- I don't even have one in my house, and I like the silence in the car. However, I listen to Pandora radio a lot- usually tuned into a classical station.

No T.V., but I watch a movie every now and then. Some favorties include: LOTR, Pride and Predjudice, and Princess Bride.

What is CP, anyway?

Sometimes late night radio can be interesting. Coast-to-Coast AM has had some
"good" shows, so to speak, but it's a bit much to hear it every day. It takes a lot
of mental filtering to overlook the rather ongoing insults to one's sensus catholicus.
And the ADS? Just stay close to the volume knob so you can turn it down for ads.

I don't have TV but watch DVDs from time to time. I like to see movies about
the Church in the 30's and 40's. Those were the days! I watched the DVD "Dreams
From My Real Father" about Obama and his ties to Frank Marshall Davis. That was
interesting. It's too bad the director made it so much like a fiction piece. It's like
Malachi Martin style: you never know what's real and what's fantasy. Oh, and
look out for the soft porn. Why am I surprised? I should hope they won't be
showing this in high school classrooms.

The online videos offered for free on Fatima.org are really interesting. OOPS! Not
supposed to mention religion! Okay, let's see..........

I used to be a fan of comedy shows but now I can't see them without noticing their
temptations to sin. Laurel & Hardy used to be pretty good, if you can overlook the
sɛҳuąƖ innuendos which are pretty well disguised, to be "acceptable" to our culture of
the time. There really isn't any comparison today in popular culture. We are really
living in a cesspool of moral decay.

I've got a friend who's a fan of Westerns. The conspicuous disregard for the value
of human life is all through them. The "stars" of the show never have any religious
ties, but loyalty and courage, without any reference to faith in God, are held as a
kind of deity.

In America you get this impression that it's okay to be a honorable and upstanding
without any faith in God. Conversely, anyone who practices his Catholic faith openly
gets chided and ridiculed for it, especially when it opposes popular attitudes.

So here is this thread, hoping to do just that: let's make a religious forum into a
secular swill bucket, and have a good time for a change, okay?

Oh Jen51, you are every shade of awesome. :) The cookbooks, the grocery ads...I always think it's just me.

Lately I've been reading all about fermented foods. The health benefits and how to do it. I love to can, but fermentation is a new world to me. How strange is it to get excited about sauerkraut?? :)

I love canning, too. How strange is it to get excited about sauerkraut?? Well, maybe a little strange to the modern american world (and who cares what they say), but I think it's completely normal to our nature as women. It is SO exciting to accomplish something for the first time after reading about it, and attempting it. For the two of us, this accomplishing just happens to be in the form of things that deal with food. :)

Gosh, I don't think I've read anything that isn't religious in a while. I'm reading fiction for the first time in years and it's still religious, Malachi Martin's Vatican. Well, it's "officially" fiction.

For music, same thing. I listen to jazz and a lot of instrumental stuff that isn't religious per se. The ocassional indie pop and rock as well.

For video, anything that's moral. Lately I've been watching a lot of ESPN's 30 for 30 series on Netflix Streaming.

tried to grow squash this yr, the palnts grew, flowers bloomed, then started to close up and though "great, veggies on the way" but nothing more, not a single squash!

this and with good watering, soil an more then usual rain for summer......

oops, sorry, thought we could all have a discussion, amongst Catholic, of everyday life, esp in this section. Odd, did not know gardening was a swill bucket and sorry if you felt hamstringed about mentioning religion, odd my post did not say "dont do that". just wondering what clean cut things people like to do when not praying, religious practices........silly of me to wonder

The forum has been very peaceful without you! It was a war when you were here last. Read your post again. Most of it is illegible ramblings, and then the insults. Those of us who have been here a long time remember you! Please refrain from your rude impure coments, which do not reflect a trad Catholic.

Watch: T.V. is not to my taste, but I have lately enjoyed David Suchet's portrayal of Hercule Poirot in some of the film adaptations of Agatha Christie's novels.

I want to enjoy fishing, but I haven't had the opportunity yet. I'm afraid I would damage my hands and be unable to play piano.

thanks for rpelying in the spirt meant by this thread to start with...

no, not extreme, when one attacks you, is flat out nasty and does not know what is talked about, but singles you out and flat out refuses to read other posts to get an idea of what is going on to start with......

I tried to give her some insight and explanation. That did not work.......then she accuse me of being what I was refuting to others or trying to. For no reason, I then get attacked for working and having some time to post here. THen, one presumes to speak for others and tell you "we did not like you boefore, not like you now and you are not welcomed here" sort of thing......when I had not attacked her, let alone in any earnest........a timeline would prove helpful ,but I do not have that time to do one.....

Like the music you noted, cannot play an instrument worth a flip (very left brained afriad) and like you, enjoy the Suchet Poirot-had read that the Christie family had actually approached him to do the show.....he does a good job......

always great to see a good mystery, also, listen to old radio programs....

by all means, protect those gifted hands.....dont blame you there, like a surgeon....
