I suppose you know, but many people are replacing the children they will never have with pets.

Furthermore, this isn't even fiction these days, this is already happening. For example, check this article (Spanish but you can use an online translator):

This has been going on for quite some time in NY, it started with guys on the gαydar spectrum in the 1980’s. You’d see them in Chelsea and the West Village pushing ladies’ lap dogs in strollers. Now, it’s all sorts of people acting like a pet is a baby. 
I’ll take a pass on the video. It’s not worth $9.00 toll plus parking to see it.

They keep throwing around the term "fur baby".

Wait for their reaction when they are told some dog's have hair and not fur!  :laugh1:

And "adoption" when you get a dog.  I don't remember that term being used in that way when I was young.
