  • For those who eschew getting a ham license, this article shows a very talented installation of a 50-watt GMRS radio:

    Dear Mark,
Do you know about the agriculture bundles and which walkie talkies to use?  We need vehicle and tractor communication along with walkie talkies while on foot. They have a MXR500AG Repeater and a MXT115AGVP3 Micomobile bundle.  Help!  Any advice is appreciated!

  • Because I am licensed, I have not invested much effort in GMRS, FRS, or CB radio.  I simply unlocked our amateur radios to use them on the bands and at the power we select.

I'd start with the gear mentioned in the posted article. I think it meets your described mission requirements.

  • Good recommendation Mark.

Texana - You might contact Midland and explain your situation, perhaps giving you a discount. Not sure about that, however.

Another option, in terms of saving dollars - if you known a ham or someone with the know-how - is to get used, older (even 1990's) Motorola radios (MaxTrac, Radius, CDM series - built like tanks). Specifically, in the UHF band (where GMRS/FRS frequencies are located, 462-467 MHz). They can be reprogrammed for the GMRS/FRS band.

If your communications are just short distance (few miles or so), CB could be an option too. Even handheld CB's are available.

  • GMRS is basically CB on a different set of frequencies.

I keep a cheap Baofeng handheld ham transceiver charged up, but I might use it once a year.

Unfortunately the FCC came down of Baofeng for not locking out non-ham bands on their radios. The newer Baofengs do not have the same capabilities as those of yore.

  • I came across this today: https://baofengtech.com/product/amp-v25/

It is a worthy purchase for you guys who have only a Baofeng handheld.  Merry Christmas!

This would be a great thing to have.  I can't afford something like that right now, but good to know.
