Although it is a basic, military-style pistol without the frills and extra polish of many commercially produced guns, the M70A runs very well for a handgun with a suggested retail price under $300 dollars. It certainly is a refreshing change from the standardized 1911 and striker-fired polymer pistols currently dominating the market.

  • Interesting. I suppose if you're on a budget, it would be satisfactory home defense. I will stick with my Sig Sauer P226 MK25.  Never rusts and notoriously reliable.

  • I don't know what the surplus situation is in the US right now but here in Canada in the last few years we got a few big shipments in of the original Soviet era Tokarevs plus boatloads of 7.62x25 ammo.  They were advertising a year ago a combo tok pistol+ original cleaning kit+2 mags+ case of 1250rnds ammo for under $400!! Too bad they had sold out by the time I went to buy.  If another shipment comes in of Tokarevs I am definitely picking a couple up.  They are a great 'beater' handgun for that price. And the surplus ammo is so cheap you can scarcely reload it for that price.

We also got in a big shipment of the original Russian made SKS's too that sold like hotcakes... that I missed out on as well.  Argh, gotta be faster on pulling the trigger on these surplus deals.

I was able to get an M57 and get a large tin of polish surplus to go with it for about that price.

Yes, it's fun to shoot.  However, it doesn't have a functional safety.

These newly manufactured ones do have a good safety.

You can also buy a newly manufactured one in 7.62x25, which is a good round.

  • The SKS is great for some testosterone filled fun. If you check your local gun store, a shipment is coming in the next few weeks.

It is an excellent round. Those will go through anything.
I like the 9mm Makarov round myself.
It's inexpensive, has a bit more power than the 380acp and the Milsurp handguns chambered for the 9x18 Mak, specifically the CZ-82 (Czech) and the P-64 (Polish) are unbeatable in pricing, dependability, all in all they are great guns.

Yes, it is based on the round for the Mauser c-96, and was used in the soviet submachine guns, which frequently used by German soldiers on the Eastern Front.

Yes I wish I had those two.
