I feel out of place on this forum. All the men seem to be experts on guns. I have a pocket knife.

Hope you dont run into a pack of feral negroes that decide youre guilty for the Treyvon Martin killing....

Or that your government doesnt collapse and you now must defend your domicile from packs of ferals that desire to cause you and yours harm.

Or from Govt goons themselves.   Tree of Liberty and all that...

  • How amusing that the Brooklyn rebitsin who insulted Moisin Nagants is suddenly budget-minded with his Sears knockoff and accuses me of being gun snobbish—the same Brooklyn yenta, a self-proclaimed, loud-mouthed, and insulting expert on every subject on this forum, who submitted measurement of the two closest holes of a group from his Sears brand "choice of SWAT teams" at an unspecified distance and stance as evidence of "accuracy," but accuses others of ignorance.

Far from snobbish, Jerk, recall that I was completely in accord with comparing Sears and Moisin Magant as in the same class.  It was you, Rebitsin, that got your back up about how the Moisin Nagant was beneath you.

  • I bought them at AIM surplus and it was in state.  No FFL required, just a $15 dollar fee.

  • Ha, ha, ha.... nice group for a rebbetsin... You can still see the how the powder flecked the Birchwood Casey target. How far?  ...maybe a meter and you still couldn't cloverleaf 'em with your Sears knockoff.

Oy veh! 6,000# harvests and 100 yd targets—Ha, ha, ha.... tell us another one.  You can probably get a comedy gig in the Catskills.

That's cool if you want something like that.  Personally though, I'd think something like this, would be more practical

Mossberg Model 185KA 20Ga Bolt Action Shotgun. Good to Very Good Condition, Used.
    35-938xqx
     $89.95

  • In view of the widespread reporting of DHS ammo purchases, it is expected that there would be panic buying. See the comment on the home page about 5.56 NATO purchases:

  • Here is my heirarchy of SHTF weaponry:

    1) AK-47: Cheap, reliable, cheap ammo, and if you live in a city like me, you won't be taking 200+ yard shots anyway.  Additionally, slidefire solutions just came out with a "bump-fire" stock that can be fitted to any stamped AK-47 receiver, making it equivalent to fully automatic.  Totally BATFE legal....for now.

    2) Saiga 12-Gauge Semi-Auto Shotgun: Great for city combat; capable of holding a 25 round barrel drum, turning it into the best street-sweeper in town.  Very reliable, and you can get great deals on cheap Sellier-Bellot 9 pellet buckshot on cheaperthandirt.com for like 25 shells for $10.  In a riot situation, this street sweeper will seriously thin the crowd.

    3) PTR-91 KF: Surprised?  Greatly improved reliability over the ammo-finicky models of the early days.  This HK-91 clone in .308 caliber will give you the ability to "reach out and touch someone" at 400 yards with iron sights, and 650 with a scope, on the chance you can make it out of the city to the countryside (where a bit more range will be desirable).  Priced at about $900-1100, the new ones run well on cheap .308 surplus ammo, which is a huge benefit, given the average cost/round of domestic ammo.  Did I mention it might be the only gun meaner looking than an AK-47?

    4) Russian SKS.  Surprised again?  You can get these on gunbroker.com for $400, and they use the same cheap 7.62x39 ammo as the AK-47.  Limited in range to 200 yards, but if you need to arm a handful of recruits to help you defend the fort, you can get 5 of them for the cost of one average priced .308.  Good to have a few of these in the safe to pass out.

    5) Gammo pellet rifle: Stealth hunting will be important.

    6) Ruger 10/22: Cheap ammo; you can get 550 rounds for less than $20; the ammo itself could be a currency, but the gun is easily the most accurate "out of the box" .22 caliber rifle in the world.  And at $200+ why wouldn't you have one?  The availability of sub-sonic ammo also makes for the possibility of a tactical close range sniper if the gangs hit the city (i.e., You won't want them to know it is you shooting, but would be nice to thin the herd a bit).

    7) Handguns: Anything bigger than .32

    Just one man's opinion!

  • 20 years ago I would have argued against any of the AK/Saiga guns simply because (1) the AR15/M16 series, being the nation's military weapon, had better parts and accessories availability and (2) the 5.56 NATO has better exterior ballistics and wound ballistics than the 7.62x39.  Objection #1 faded long ago;  the AK/Saiga series is now very well represented here. Objection #2 remains.

As a former admirer/owner of several HK series firearms, I decided that (1) parts and accessories were seriously over-priced and that (2) the FAL series is superior in affordability, reliability, and shootability.  Compared to the FAL gas system, the HK roller block system beats up the shooter unnecessarily compromising the speed of follow-up shots.  This is most convincingly demonstrated in side-by-side rock 'n roll comparison.

Handguns: nothing less than .40  (though the micro North American Arms .22WMR has some role as a modern shuriken equivalent)

Good choice, except for two small caveats: Don't buy the really cheap knock-offs, like Romanian surplus. They usually have horrible accuracy, even by AK standards, and (supposedly) very un-AK like unreliability. If you can, get one of the new ones made by Arsenal of Bulgaria. Nothing but good reviews. Or get a Yugo surplus if you can find one.

Caveat two: Automatic fire is a terrible idea, especially for untrained civilians. The military rarely uses full auto in assault rifles, because of the lack of accuracy and ammo wasted. That's one reason why the took full auto off of the M16A2, and replaced it with 3-shot burst. Trained professionals only use full-auto when absolutely necessary, and only in short two-three round bursts. Even machine-gunners using M240s or M249s will typically only fire 5-6 round bursts, maximum. It's good for scaring people, but not much else. And if you're using it on an AK, expect atrocious accuracy.

Not in the military, btw, just going off the opinion/advice of a good man I once knew who was an armorer in NAVSPECWARCOM.
