  • I've been doing a lot of research on guns lately. This looks like an excellent deal for a very decent functioning, reliable, proven, and economical gun. They go for $99 bucks everywhere around here, as they've been re-arsenaled. What do you think for an extra gun to have for a buddy?

This guy has an excellent video covering the gun and its functionality:

  • Yeah I bought a couple for $150 but 880 rounds of ammo for it doubles the price.

The cartridges are huge.  It's bulky, very loud gun.  The bolt is tricky to disassemble and reassemble.

The ammo is not suitable for home defense, it's a hunting target gun.  The bullets could conceivably go through several walls if given the chance.

  • I figured the ammo would cost quite a bit. Also, the going through the walls is definitive an issue, not to mention length for home defense.  But I was indeed thinking of using it as a cheaper hunting gun for big game if ever needed...

Overall, were you happy with your purchase?

Yes, because I like WWII history.  You can't get a cheaper combat rifle than that.

And I was lucky, one of them has a beautiful stock.

  • This would be a good choice if you wanted to buy about 10 of them, and pass them out to unprepared neighbors and friends to form a mutual defense group in a crisis situation.

Best to bring a bore light when purchasing, so that you can see the condition of the barrel.

Doesn't matter if it is dirty, but you want to see nice deep rifling grooves, without seeing any of them chipped.

But as Tele pointed out, ammo brings the price up quite a bit, aft which point you might as well have bought an SKS, which also has the benefit of much more common and cheap ammo, and is more accurate as well.

It would also be an excellent barter item, just be sure not to give them too much ammo or it could come back to haunt you.

  • I'm afraid to own a gun. It seems like if you shoot someone you go to jail, no matter what the situation. Anybody know the percentage of people a year who shoot someone in self0defense that end up serving jailtime?

I'd like to shoot for recreation at ranges. I think that would be fun. Only shot a rifle twice and that was a long time ago. I wonder if a bbgun would be good protection. I got hit by a bb once and it was very painful and broke my skin.

    Maybe from squirrel attacks.

No doubt it was, but merely breaking the skin and causing some pain isn't going to stop anyone.

Well, there are some pretty impressive air guns on the market, and if someone came into my house and that was all I had, I would certainly try for a head shot, but after that shot, you better be ready to follow-up with something else.

There are also interesting stun guns for use at intermediate range which would definitely incapacitate at attacker, and you would not need to get within arm reach to use them, if you are leery of guns.

  • Stun guns are a great idea! I think I may get one. They have stun guns that look and function as flashlights do and have a million volts.

Just remember, unlike a gun, the assailant you neutralize with a stun gun will quickly recover in a minute or two, so you probably want to have a plan to tie him up or something, if you ever actually had to neutralize an invader.

Good point! Do you have one?

Also good to use on animals. Take it on safari and zap the crocs and lions if they get too close!

  • The mosin nagant is not really a rifle for beginners.

The safety is very hard to operate, and many females or very young people will not be able to engage it at all.  It requires pulling the entire bolt backwards with a lot of force, and then, while keeping the force constant, rotating the bolt such that a flange engages in a channel.

The cartridge is large - about the equivilent of a 30-06, so it kicks - your picture shows the carbine variant, and because they are short they kick even more.  The standard version rifle is a long piece, as was common in the pre WW1 rifles.  It takes some practice to hold a four foot long rifle steady.  It is deafeningly loud.

With practice, however, it is a great weapon.  Ammo is cheap and plentiful, and the heavy ball surplus will blast through wood, masonry, and at close ranges, steel and bulletproof vests.  You can outrange an AR type rifle by hundreds of yards.  The external magazine has a trap door, so unfired rounds can be dropped out into the open palm without having to cycle the action - a very useful option imo.

The mosin is very easy to maintain, and the bolt assembly can be completely broken down with no tools in a pinch.  The action is so robust that it is hard to imagine it jamming seriously.  As you said, for $100, it is a bargain.  The spike bayonet is wicked.  Hunting ammo is now available so it can be used as a deer rifle.

Great guns, but to get the most out of it and master its foibles, spend a fair amount of range time first.

Your ammo ran about 17 cents a round.  That's one fifth the price of .45 cal ACP ammo, and less than half the price of cheap m-16 ammo and even cheaper than cheap ak-47 ammo as advertised on Cheaper than Dirt.  That's a great price for ammo.  But if its Soviet bloc surplus, you must clean the rifle promptly after use.

You're half right about home defense - it's great if the baddies are still outside the house, because you can shoot them a half mile away and if they have an ar or ak type rifle, while they get to absorb your bullets for the next 500 yards until they can return fire with any real chance of hitting you.  Since the Soviets designed the cartridge for combat in Stalin era concrete cities, your shots will be drilling through their vehicles, body armor, as well as vaporizing the rocks and jersey barriers they try to hide behind.

Once someone is in the house, though, you're completely right.  The rounds will go through walls, doors, drywall, studwordk, and anything that isn't made out of bricks or concrete.  Then, the rounds will go through them after about five or ten shots.   So firendly fire is definitely a consideration.  Because most surplus ammo is jacketed mil spec, it's not good for deer because it will drill clean through the animal, and the hunter will have to track the beast until it bleeds out.  Wolf and, I think Remington, now make soft points for hunting in 7.62x54.  :ready-to-eat:

  • Could you equip a silencer on it so the shots wouldn't be so loud?
