A Minnesota Facility Admits To A Radioactive Leak

A nuclear plant in Minnesota has admitted that there is a radioactive leak from the facility. The admission came on Thursday, that a nuclear power plant near Minneapolis had suffered a radioactive water spill amounting to over 1.5 million liters.

Xcel Energy, which owns the Monticello Nuclear Generating Plant, is working to clean up the spill and insists there is no danger to the general public. The Minnesota Pollution Control Agency (MPCA) said that around 400,000 gallons of tritiated water leaked from a broken pipe at the facility. The leak was first discovered on November 22, and its source was found on December 19 and patched “soon after,” according to a report by RT.  (https://www.rt.com/news/573108-monticello-nuclear-tritium-leak/)

Tritium is a mildly radioactive isotope of hydrogen, often found in water used to cool nuclear reactors. The only way it can affect people is if they breathe it in or drink tritiated water, said Daniel Huff, an assistant commissioner at the Minnesota Department of Health, adding that the public’s exposure from a nuclear power plant should be zero.” -RT (https://www.rt.com/news/573108-monticello-nuclear-tritium-leak/)

The authorities decided to keep the public in the dark about the incident, while Xcel Energy and the state were actively managing” the situation to prevent the underground plume of irradiated water from spreading to the nearby Mississippi River, MPCA assistant commissioner Kirk Koudelka told the Minneapolis Star-Tribune (https://www.startribune.com/xcel-is-cleaning-up-a-radioactive-water-spill-at-monticello-plant-minnesota-tritium/600259470/).

Even though there was an attempt to hide this leak from the public, those “authorities” say there’s no risk to humans.  “Now that we have all the information about where the leak occurred, how much was released into groundwater, and that contaminated groundwater had moved beyond the original location, we are sharing this information,” MPCA spokesman Michael Rafferty added on Thursday.

“This does not present a public health or drinking water issue,” Christopher Clark, Xcel’s president for Minnesota, said. He admitted the tritiated water is “well above” the 20,000 picocuries standard mandated by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), being “in the millions” directly below the plant.

Viktoria Mitlyng, a spokeswoman for the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC), said the leak was well below the NRC safety threshold and that the plan is not in violation of regulations. Tritium leaks “are not uncommon for nuclear plants, she added.

The city of Monticello issued a statement, saying its drinking water supply was not affected by the leak, which happened outside the area from which they draw groundwater for municipal wells.
The contaminated water has not been detected beyond the plant’s perimeter, Xcel told KMSP-TV (https://www.fox9.com/news/radioactive-leak-monticello-nuclear-power-plant-xcel-energy-cleaning-it-up). -RT (https://www.rt.com/news/573108-monticello-nuclear-tritium-leak/)

The Monticello facility had a leak of around 2,000 gallons (7,500 liters) in 1981, with some of the water reaching the river, but state health officials said it posed no danger to wildlife or public health.

Here's my question: If the 1981 leak of only 2,000 gallons of radioactive water made it into the Mississippi River (i.e., from whence a large partion of the Twin Cities Metro Area receives its drinking water), how is it possible that this 400,000 gallon spill allegedly did not???

Essentially, this top expert in the field says that radioactivity is not dangerous in general.  He says that he used to swim in the radioactive pools at nuke plants he designed and would eat radioactive material repeatedly on his lecture tours.  This is no mere scientific layman, but the engineer who designed some of the first nuclear power plants.

What did they do before nuclear plants and solar plants?

Just a bunch of jobs to make sure people vote liberal.

Interesting. It doesn't mean he never suffered effects from it years later. He admits the radiation exists, that it can do things that are harmful to the body (generating UV when reacting with the air), and that it can cause burns and death in high amounts. He seems focused on the immediate effects: visible burns and death, and doesn't seem to consider any long term effects even after the body has initially healed from a burn. He may be wrong on radiation, I think he is. I've only ever been concerned about the long term effects like with sunburns, not the immediate risk of handling radioactive and other toxic metals (lead). It doesn't mean he's wrong about the conspiracy stuff, and yes, the lawmakers are lying by saying you will get burned when you won't.
