Another tip -- if you want to use salt (about the cheapest of the homemade weed killers), buy a bag of water softener salt.

I got a 40 pound bag at Wal-mart for $5.40 or so.

Considering a 1 lb. 10 oz. (1.625 pounds) can of salt usually costs 33 to 35 cents, I saved about $3.00 by buying 40 pounds at once in pellet form.

You have to let it dissolve in the water for a couple hours, but it's worth it. Use hot water, and it will go faster.

P.S. The salt recipe REALLY WORKS WELL but you do need to add a bit of dish soap (dawn, ajax) to help it stick to the leaves. Also, NEVER use this near plants you care about!

I agree -- I dislike the store generally.

About the only reason I ever go there is price. Their customer service -- if you can call it that -- reeks. There are many moral problems with Wal-mart as well.

If everyone supported Wal-mart no more than I did, they wouldn't be very rich, that's for sure. How often do you need a 40 lb. bag of salt? And how much could they possibly be making on that bag?

I mostly get staples there -- we don't buy the cheap junk they constantly put out. That is also what they have the highest margins on. With a lot of their Chinese junk, you'd just be buying it again and again because it falls apart in a week or two. And they have a LOT of non-practical stuff we wouldn't dream of buying. We skip cosmetics, Jєωelry, toys, too many departments to mention.

I used to buy compost there, but I found a much cheaper (local) source.

In short, I try to find an alternative for just about everything I buy at Wal-mart -- but sometimes there's no better or cheaper alternative. I only buy things there where quality doesn't matter (4 lb. bag of sugar, a bunch of bananas, etc.)

We do a bunch of our grocery shopping at a local Texas grocery store chain (HEB). And we get all our hamburger from a local butcher in our small town.

Forget Windex.  It's going to be salt, next.  Windex was like fertilizer!

We inherited a very bad rampant poison oak and ivy problem.

We have been out swelterting, battling mosquitos and spiders for hours, trying the get rid of the weeds.  It has rained so much this year!  A new jungle grows every few days.

Great. I needed information an homemade weed killer. Everything I needed to think about was included in the explanation. The reply about Walmart was a bit over the top, as I recall. There are worse evils in the world than Walmart. I could name a few but some people might get very upset for stepping on their weeds. Thanks for the weed killer info. Now I think that I will go out and kill a few more WEEDS.
