I said as soon as they started with the "autonomous vehicle" crap that this was coming.

Do you see that statue of Our Lady there without the tiniest bit of ash on her, standing out over a sea of ash?

Hah, you posted the screenshot before I had refreshed the thread.

  • I have been looking for an early 90's SUV- preferably a Toyota of some kind, because I want something before the computer controls were inserted.
    Well!
I must not be the only one thinking like this because these vehicles in average shape are incredibly expensive! I can't touch them. If fact there are private businesses buying them up, restoring them and charging astronomical prices for them.
(The kill switches are already in the cars for over 20 years. All they have to do is activate it.)

2010s Tundras and Tacomas are pretty great actually, and with the price in used cars jumping buy now. I'm not convinced prices are ever coming down again.

Get a Tacoma first gen, if it is 99-04 make sure to check for rust and knock on the frame in a lot of places. If the owner will let you stab the frame with a screwdriver. If it punctures walk away. If not buy. Also check the suspension, leaf springs etc... People love to overload Tacos.

If you want a second gen Tacoma don't bother with a year below 2010. Go 2010-2014. These are fantastic and don't have the rust problems 2000s Tacos and Tundras have.

If you want a Tundra go 2013+ unless you go 2006+ with the 4.6L engine. The 5.7 has a fatal flaw in the cam tower where the factory doesn't seal it perfectly up until ~2013. It's fully fixed in the third gen (2014+) which are spendy but fantastic. Worth noting that the first gen have better payloads than the later ones but you are trading that for a frame that rusts more easily.

Between these options you should be able to get a decent vehicle for under 30 (lol prices these days) that will make it to 500k miles at least.

Yep, Toyota trucks are the best on the market. Makes me wish I could get my hands on an old Hilux though...

Hondas are great too. Excellent engines.

I made a point of getting a cheap 2010 Pilot after turning in my Chevy lease just because Hondas are easier and cheaper to work on than anything. And I have a cousin who is a Honda mechanic.

  • I prefer Toyota over Honda.  I’ve known people who had all kinds of issues with Honda.

  • If I win the lottery, as this will be the only way I will afford such, I would like to give the Tundra an honest try. I have neighbours who own a Tundra and Tacoma respectively. Solid trucks I have ridden in. The Tacoma though is too small for us Polish polar bear sized TradCats.
I will be gifted a Honda Accord in the new year at some point once my older brother finishes fixing it. Too cold to work on it now even in a heated garage.

His wife has a Subaru which runs great but they really need to get winter tires put on I am told.

I also wouldn’t mind trying an F350 honking snorting diesel with massive winter tires and a lockable bed cover to haul guns up to the mountains.

Or a surplus Russian tank for city Driving especially in winter.:cowboy:

  • (I know this thread was originally about the untouched statue of our Lady at the La Palma ash fields, so I kinda feel bad talking about cars.....)
But yes, I'm looking at old Toyota Landcruisers, before the computer insertion in 1996. Very, very expensive. I just want to be able to "move" when they pull the kill switch.
BTW my son has some special kind of 5 speed 2013 Tacoma that is worth more today than when he bought it used in 2017.

Have you used the used car search engine (pun intended) on edmunds.com?
Pick your model and year and it does a national search. There are other such sites, e.g., autotrader.com.

  • We are adding a new driver to our family next week, so, if I return to work in January as I hope, we'll need yet another car.

Unless we win the lottery (bought a ticket today), I'd like a pre-OBD Tacoma or a VW TDI Diesel. Bodeens advice may push me towards a 2010-2014 Taco.

We filled up the diesel today at $4/gallon. :( Luckily we get about 40mpg.

I was astonished at how expensive used cars are. In looking locally (I shopped for 3-4 months for our last car purchase) I found high mileage Tacos costing more than the price of new vehicles when I last looked only 2 years ago,

The push is on. They want to micro-manage our lives in every way.

(((They))) don't want Josefa, Kaz, Dig, or me to be away when (((they))) visit. :laugh2:

Ha, ha, ha, I won this time. I caught the character substitution in the link before it "shut me down."

Regular gas here in my part of Canuckistan or Chinadah, (I am being snarky), is 139.9 per litre of gas. Times that x 4 to get your gallon price! Diesel? I think it is is sitting at 147.9 per litre of gas. Again, times that x4 to get your gallon price. The semi-drivers here are hating it.
